Berlin – Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) wants to ban oil and gas heating from 2024.

This emerges from a draft law by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which the

first reported on.

According to this, from next year all new heating systems should produce heat from 65 percent renewable energies.

In fact, the plans mean the end of oil and gas heating.

Habeck wants a general operating ban from 2045

According to the

, only new oil and gas heating systems should be banned in the first step.

According to the draft law, old heating systems will also be given a new term: They should only be allowed to run for a maximum of 30 years, and from 2045 there will be no more oil and gas.

If an oil or gas heating system breaks down, Habeck wants owners to have three years to switch to renewables.

So which types of heating will still be allowed in the future?

The following heating systems mainly use renewable energies to generate heat:

  • heat pumps

  • solar thermal systems

  • wood and pellets

  • biomass and biogas

  • district heating

From 2025: All heaters need a smart meter

According to the Bild

newspaper, the draft law also states

that from 2025 all heating systems will use modern measuring technology to help reduce consumption.

The smart meters send the consumption data digitally to the consumer and the utility company.

At the beginning of the year, the federal cabinet had already approved a law that would make the installation of smart meters mandatory from 2032.

However, there are considerable doubts as to whether Habeck's law will find enough support in its current form.

Both the SPD and the FDP have told

Bild

that the law needs to be improved.
