Protective vest and helmet on: now eight-year-old Viktoriia is ready to be evacuated from her village.

Zarichne is west of Lysychansk, only a few kilometers from the current front line.

Valeria, policewoman:

»

It is a family with one child and the child should be in a safe place.

More and more residential buildings are being destroyed, and people are suffering.

Children shouldn't be here.

«

A year after the war began, Russia is still trying to gain military control of the entire Donbass.

The youngest Ukrainians are also suffering from Russian attacks in Krasnogorowka near Donetsk.

They live on humanitarian aid: food and medicine are only supplied by a special police unit, the "White Angels".

Vasyl, police officer:

»

Our police unit is on duty almost every day.

It's quite dangerous to work here, but we've gotten used to everything.

We have been deployed since the war began in 2014.

For us it is a daily routine.

«

The inhabitants are also used to the constant threat - some so much that they want to stay despite everything.

Yuliya, resident:

»

I decided to stay here because of my house.

We have lived here since the start of the war in 2014 and everything is fine here.

I'm afraid for the safety of my children.

But most of all, I'm afraid of having to go somewhere else.

To be honest, what scares me the most is the thought of having to leave this place.

My children have the opportunity to study here.

Both have finished elementary school.

I'm sure that my two boys are gifted and pick up everything very quickly.

We have mobile internet here, and both have the opportunity to continue learning.

«

Before the war, about 18,000 people lived in the small town, 1,500 are still here, says one of the helpers - who himself comes from Krasnogorovka.

Volodymyr, policeman:

»

At the beginning of the war I suffered a lot from the fact that my hometown was destroyed by the Russians.

My parents lived here, I went to school in Krasnogorovka, all my friends lived here.

Can you imagine how I feel walking down these deserted streets?

But at the moment it's just part of my job, nothing more.

I pay no attention to the destroyed buildings, the burned school and the destroyed park.

«

There are various reasons for staying despite the dangers: some are simply afraid of changes or looting, others are just waiting for the Russians to come.

Some have been dulled by the war.

And so they persevere and are still dependent on the humanitarian aid of the »White Angels«.
