At least 36 people were killed and dozens more injured after two trains collided in northern Greece on Tuesday night, according to the country's Fire Service.

Vassilis Varthakogiannis, a spokesman for the entity, told a televised briefing on Wednesday that 66 people are being treated at the hospital so far, six of them in intensive care units.

In addition, 194 passengers were safely transferred by bus to the second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki, and 20 people were transferred by bus to the city of Larissa.

The reason for the crash is still unknown.

The identification process for the victims of a train collision that occurred in Greece on Tuesday night has begun, Greek Health Minister Thanos Plevris said on Wednesday.

"We have started the process of identifying the dead. As you understand, this is a terrifying process for the parents and relatives who are here. We will help them as much as we can," Plvris said, outside the hospital in Larissa, the city near where they crashed. the two trains.

For his part, Ioannis Artopoios, spokesman for the Greek Fire Service, said Wednesday that search and rescue operations are continuing.

According to the Greek Fire Service, crews on site are focusing their efforts on the first two (train) carriages of the passenger train.
