Withdrawing money elsewhere than at your bank is becoming more and more expensive

2023-03-01T09:46:52.622Z

The average annual cost of these "displaced withdrawals" will reach 12.75 euros in 2023, an increase of 48% in two years.

This seems to be a corollary to the growing abandonment of cash by the French, and therefore of ATMs: withdrawing money outside your bank is more and more expensive.

According to a study by the banking comparator Panorabanques published on Tuesday, the average annual cost of what are called "displaced withdrawals" amounts to 12.75 euros in 2023 - for four withdrawals per month with a classic card -, i.e. 6, 25% more than in 2022 (12 euros) but above all 48% more than in 2021 (8.60 euros).

To explain this increase, Panorabanques explains that “

banks are increasingly charging for withdrawals moved beyond 1 euro

”.

In addition, "

banks are increasingly reducing the number of free withdrawals with a conventional bank card

", underlines the study.

In 2023, seven banks have thus reduced this monthly flat rate, including Banque de Savoie (from 4 to 2), Banque Populaire Val de France (from 3 to 2) or even certain Crédit Agricole banks.

By 2022, CIC and all the banks of the Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale Group had already reduced this number from four to two.

For its part, the Caisse d'Epargne Languedoc Roussillon increased the unit cost of withdrawals moved in 2023, from 1 to 1.02 euro.

Continued decline in the number of distributors

Among the banks that charge the most for these displaced withdrawals, Panorabanques cites LCL (1.42 euros per displaced withdrawal, after the free package of 3 displaced withdrawals with a traditional bank card), Banque Populaire Occitane (1.3 euros per displaced withdrawal , after the free fixed price of 3 moved withdrawals with a classic bank card), or even Banque Populaire Val de France (1.2 euro per moved withdrawal, after the free fixed price of 2 moved withdrawals with a classic bank card).

One of the ways to limit these costs is for example to "

subscribe to a top-of-the-range bank card

", quotes Panorabanques, or even to "

subscribe to an unlimited

".

Otherwise, making all withdrawals in the network of his bank or staying within his limit of free withdrawals are probably the least expensive solutions.

For many bank customers, these additional fees may soon be reduced anyway.

BNP Paribas, Société Générale and Crédit Mutuel Alliance Fédérale (which owns CIC) will indeed pool, from the fourth quarter of 2023, the 15,000 ATMs they manage in France (i.e. one third of the park ).

Distributor base which has continued to shrink in recent years (-14% between 2015 and 2021), to adapt to the decline in the use of cash, which has accelerated with the health crisis.

For the three banking networks, this pooling of withdrawal points should above all make it possible to reduce the management costs of their distributors, which are expensive to maintain.
