Commissioner Kobi Shabtai backed up the police officers today (Thursday), after the incidents of violence and the use of stun guns and stun grenades in last night's demonstrations across the country.

Shabtai spoke at the graduation ceremony at the National Police College, and emphasized that the backing "does not exempt us from internal investigation and learning lessons."

Shabtai opened by saying that "the right to protest is the lifeblood of democracy in Israel, and the Israel Police is committed to this.

We consider the right to protest a cornerstone in a democratic country.

At the same time, we cannot put up with violence and disturbances on a wide scale, and it's easy to say that, as commissioner, I cannot put up with attacking police officers."

He noted that there are 11 police officers who were injured during the demonstrations.
