Itamar Ben Gvir's time of truth Israel today

2023-03-02T21:59:31.907Z

The new Minister of National Security learns the hard way that what you see from there you don't see from here • After obtaining a generous budget for his office, he has the opportunity to present serious work plans • His public test is difficult, but possible

Bad news keeps piling up these days on the desk of the Minister of National Security Itamar Ben Gabir.

What does not flow in, at the rate of bundles.

Ayoub's news is terrible regarding terrorist attacks, horrifying criminal events such as the rape in the fence, and also the continuation of the never-ending routine of murders in the Arab sector.

To be honest, no trend of improvement or change was recorded in the Jewish sector either.

All this without counting the number of "quiet" terrorist incidents on the roads of Judea and Samaria, the throwing of stones and Molotov cocktails, the shooting and sabotage attempts that occur around the clock.

Two months since the establishment of the government, and the promissory note for restoring governance, for enforcing order, for internal security - has not been paid.

Is it all Ben Gvir's fault?

Not sure.

He is washed in a wave of challenges on a daily, sometimes hourly basis.

The wave on which he stormed the Knesset and entered the minister's office had already turned into foam on the water.

But this is what he wanted, and this is also Ben Gvir's moment of truth.

The moment when he is expected to pay off the bills and climb the mountain of expectations he steadily created in the vigorous election campaign he led.

The chairman of Otzma Yehudit understands that beyond the ongoing treatment of problems, the expanding list of victims casts doubt on his ability to meet the requirements.

This means that in any criminal or security incident, his public, personal and political status is now at stake, and that his future will be determined by the response he tries to implement.

As cynical as this may sound, it cannot be denied that he is being measured with a magnifying glass, and that public support for him depends on his actions in the coming days, weeks and months.

The time is very short, and the work is more than you can imagine.

prone to mistakes

This is a difficult situation to maneuver even for a veteran, effective and shrewd politician - let alone one of the newest ones.

And Ben Gvir, we almost managed to forget, although he has been around the public arena for many years and is considered a media genius who devotes himself to it effectively, the position of Minister of National Security is not only his first ministerial position, but also his first public position.

Is the failure predictable?

Not sure.

But the whirlwind that accompanies him in his first steps as a leader with national responsibility on his shoulders makes him prone to disasters and big mistakes.

The main concern in the coalition is Ben Gvir being pushed into a corner, where he will feel that he has no choice but to dissolve the government.

Buds in this direction were seen this week, when members of his faction boycotted a discussion and vote in the Knesset against the coalition.

It was a declaratory vote, but the real declaration was the empty chairs of Otzma Yehudit members.

Statements against the government's policy are also a familiar event from the environment of Ben Gabir, his ministers and members of the Knesset.

The new minister may be forced to make a decision, as the song says, and the meaning is clear: the overthrow of the right-wing government, with all that implies.

The immediate result of such a move will be the political downfall of Ben Gvir himself, who shows naivety not only because he is a young and inexperienced minister, but also because of his lack of internalization that the campaign was and is over.

Moving between arenas, impassioned speeches, excitement and sentimentality, decisive statements and verbal outbursts were effective as a means of expressing public frustration, as an authentic reflection of feelings experienced by many of us.

But a responsible minister is actually expected to have a different type of behavior, one that reflects stability, firmness, self-confidence, and above all the ability to lead and lead in stressful situations.

And above all, now is the time for activity, for actions, for formulating a policy that will present a horizon of change.

And yet, if he manages to breathe a little between the upheavals of the harsh reality, if he is able to learn to deal with the internal and external pressure, Ben Gavir is also looking forward to a real opportunity.

Indeed, there is an urgent need to change and strengthen governance and security, but no one expects this to happen at the push of a button.

The terror that has accompanied Zionism for more than 100 years did not stop just because Ben Gabir entered the bureau and the cabinet, and he hits us whether the government is strong or whether it is swaying.

The confrontational policy that characterizes the conduct of the police vis-à-vis the minister in charge of it has not disappeared from the public's view either.

Patience is not infinite and may not be particularly long either, but the expectation from Ben Gvir is to lead to change, not perform magic.

The considerable budget that will be added to the Israel Police in the following budget years will allow it to increase and optimize the operations of the police over time.

Actions lead to results, even if not immediate.

At the level of actions, even if he has not yet shown great success, the Minister of National Security has not yet failed.

60 days after taking office, the young minister will be required for the first time to show sides we have not seen from him yet, to show patience, judgment and look to the future - and not to be enslaved to the headline and to conduct himself in response to the tweet that is lashing out at him today.

Regarding the police

At a good and successful time, and after countless relaxed roadblocks, the Israel Police remembered that it is not an arm of protest activism, but a law and order enforcement body, whose role is to allow all nine million citizens living in the State of Israel the freedom of movement and their daily lives.

So far, the police have behaved with the most courteous British manners in their attitude to the protest raging in the streets.

The horsemen, the stun grenades, which are the regular part of ultra-Orthodox demonstrators, settlers, Arabs, Ethiopians and just civilians - were used in protests against the reform very carefully, and almost apologetically.

The protestors and enthusiasts like Ehud Barak, Ehud Olmert, Yair Lapid, Ron Huldai and Dan Halutz decided to take the ball and not play - and along the way they also burn down the club full of players, whose only sin is their political leanings and the ballot paper they throw at the ballot box.

The feeling is that your love for the State of Israel and your concern for its future are conditional.

Depends on who is in power.

Hate, on the other hand, is free and without any conditions.
