At 11:11 p.m. on the 2nd, the authorities received multiple reports that a fire broke out at the high-rises of a building under construction on Middle Road.
The firefighters rushed to the scene after receiving the report and started two-pipe irrigation.
After the on-site assessment, the fire alarm was raised to level three at 11:39, and additional personnel were sent to rescue.
Three people were injured in the fire and had to be sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance for treatment. It is known that two of them were nearby drivers who were suspected to have been burned by falling fire debris; the other was a resident of a nearby building.
Firefighters raised the alarm to four at 1:46 a.m.
During the fire alarm, the flames scattered and affected many nearby buildings, including H Zentre, Chungking Mansions, and the roof of the Sheraton Hotel. Fortunately, they were extinguished and no one was injured.
In addition, more than 100 residents in many buildings had to be evacuated to a safe location.
Until 6:00 a.m. on the 3rd, the fire had not been extinguished.
The scene of the fire was the reconstruction site of the "Sailor's Home" at No. 11 Middle Road, and the building was engulfed in flames like a giant pillar of fire.
According to the information, the Seaman’s Club called for bids for the reconstruction plan of the “Sailor’s Home” in 2018. The project was finally won by the Empire Group under the businessman Guo Bingxiang. It was also the bid by Guo’s lifetime. The total investment is estimated to be 6 billion yuan, and it is planned to open in 2024. .
