The US presidential election is coming up next year.
The party's internal primaries are already underway with the Republicans.
Former President Donald Trump apparently cannot hope for the backing of his former deputy.
As the US broadcaster CBS News reports, Mike Pence has recently been asked several times whether he will support Trump if this presidential candidate becomes a Republican.
Trump's longtime companion shirked an answer.
"I am confident that we will have better opportunities in 2024," he said when asked by the broadcaster.
Pence has also expressed optimism that the Republican nominee will win in November 2024.
He believes voters will make “wise” decisions in 2014, just as they did in 2016.
At that time, Trump had won against Democrat Hillary Clinton.
However, he also believes that "different times call for different leadership," Pence said.
In addition to Trump, only two other people have said they want to run for the Republican presidential nomination: Nikki Haley, former governor of South Carolina, and Vivek Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur and author.
Ron DeSantis, the governor of the US state of Florida, is also expected to run for office.
Pence himself is also said to have ambitions.
He now told CBS News he wants to make a decision this spring.
