The Rhône prefecture announced on Wednesday the expansion of the bird flu control zone after the identification of a new black-headed gull carrying the virus.
This new case was detected by an individual in Villefranche-sur-Saône.
The bird showed balance disorders and a cachectic state.
When asked, ANSES confirmed the case on February 28, 2023. Consequently, a temporary control zone of 20 km around the places where the infected birds were discovered was extended to the north of the department.

Since January 11, 2023, the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI) has been identified ten times in the Metropolis of Lyon and in the south of the department on black-headed gulls, falcons and a gull.
This virus, which actively circulates in Europe through migratory birds or among native wildlife, is particularly contagious and pathogenic for birds.
“
It persists and remains active mainly in droppings and stagnant water containing contaminated droppings
,” warns the Rhône prefecture.
Within the control zone, various measures are deployed to protect poultry farms from potential contamination by wildlife, including increased biosecurity measures (sheltering), increased monitoring of breeding (laboratory analyses) and an adaptation of hunting activities (decoys of waterfowl and game birds).
In addition, the State services indicate “
that it is expressly requested not to approach wild birds and not to feed them, more particularly in this temporary control zone.
