The coalition decided today (Thursday) in an unusual step to convene the plenary this coming Sunday to finally approve the change to the Knesset's statutes, so that it will not be required to soon appoint the representatives of the Knesset to the committee for the selection of judges.

According to the regulations today, the Knesset is required to appoint the representatives within four months from the date of its establishment and now the coalition will change this so that the selection of the representatives will be within seven months at the latest.

The coalition explained that if the composition of the committee will be changed in any case as part of the reform, there is no point in electing representatives for such a short period.

The convening of the plenary on Sunday is an unusual step, and the coalition claimed that additional bills would be promoted and not just the change in question, this is due to Purim next week, when the Knesset is not active at all.

Member of Knesset Gideon Sa'ar from the state camp published a statement this evening in which he claimed that one should beware of "liars' spins", as he put it.

Sa'ar explained that "not only does the coalition not stop for a minute with the legislative moves, it specifically convenes the Knesset on Sunday, a rare step in itself, to change the Knesset's statutes. The answer: intensify the protest."

The coalition is promoting the change in the statutes for final approval following MK Ze'ev Elkin's appeal to Knesset Secretary Dan Marzuk, in which he claimed that the Knesset should choose its representatives on the committee for the selection of judges in accordance with the current statutes, since its change was not finally approved by the plenary. The coalition was pressured by this and asked to approve the change as soon as possible.

At the same time, the Constitution Committee will convene to conduct a repeat vote on the articles of legal reform that were approved by the committee on Wednesday, including the superseding clause and a dramatic reduction of judicial review of ordinary laws of the Knesset. The vote is required in light of claims by members of the Knesset in the opposition that the debate surrounding fundamental rights that may be harmed has not yet been exhausted

as a result of the legislation.

Also the special committee for amendments to the Basic Law: the government will convene on Sunday to discuss the detention law, which is designed to prevent the Prosecutor and the High Court from removing Netanyahu to detention, as well as promoting the "Dari 2 Law" which abolishes judicial review of ministerial appointments.

This law may also help Itamar Ben Gvir, against whose appointment to the position of Minister of National Security a petition is being discussed in the High Court.
