He will examine whether he may have "engaged in illegal activities in connection with his 2022 campaign," and allegations of sexual misconduct by a former aide to his office.

The House Ethics Committee announced Thursday that it has opened an investigation into Congressman George Santos, a Republican from New York who admitted to falsifying important parts of his resume before running for the November 2022 elections.

The committee voted this week to open the investigation to, it said, examine whether he may have "engaged in illegal activities in connection with his 2022 congressional campaign."

In addition, it will review whether the congressman was truthful in the financial disclosure forms;

whether he violated conflict of interest laws;

and allegations of sexual misconduct by a former employee of his office.

Santos admitted in an interview a few days ago that he is a "terrible liar" but insisted on some of the most disputed claims on his resume: that he has Jewish ancestry and that his mother was the victim of a terrorist attack in New York in September 2001.

Questions about the veracity of Santos' biography began after a 2022 New York Times investigation revealed that

 much of his personal and professional history appeared to have been fabricated

, including claims that he owned property, worked for the companies Goldman Sachs and Citigroup and that he studied and graduated from Baruch College.
