The U.S. government announced on March 2 that it would include two departments under BGI on a trade blacklist, saying that they may assist the Chinese government's surveillance program and suppress ethnic minorities in China.
Washington's move is expected to further exacerbate already strained U.S.-China relations.
Reuters reported that BGI Research and BGI Tech Solutions (Hongkong) under BGI were included in the U.S. Department of Commerce’s export control list.
In addition, server supplier Inspur Group (Inspur) and 26 other Chinese entities are also on the list. Washington said that Inspur is trying to obtain American products to support China's military modernization program.
At present, BGI, Inspur, and the Chinese embassy in Washington have not responded to the news. This time, since 2020, Washington has put BGI’s department on the economic blacklist. At that time, the US government accused the other party of using genetic analysis to Beijing will suppress the Uyghurs in the future, but the company and the Chinese government have always denied it.
