The US Department of Justice announced that victims of the Capitol attack carried out by supporters of former US President Donald Trump in January 2021 could sue him as part of a civil prosecution, without him being able to take cover behind his presidential immunity.

US police and elected members of Congress are demanding compensation from Trump, whom they accuse of inciting his supporters to attack the Capitol building, after he called on them, in a fiery speech, to “fight like devils,” to annul the results of the presidential election in which Joe Biden won.

“Presidents usually enjoy broad immunity, but that does not include covering up incitement to violence, and if the Court of Appeal agrees with this logic, complaints against Trump can resume their course,” the ministry was quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse in a document published yesterday.

The former US president called on the courts to close these files in the name of the immunity granted to US presidents to protect them from arbitrary prosecution, considering that “his speech on that day falls within the framework of his official duties, which include speaking on topics of public interest.”

Meanwhile, Trump is also under a criminal investigation supervised by a special prosecutor for his role in the assault on the Capitol.
