Numerous people, including right-wing extremists, demonstrated against the construction of accommodation for 400 refugees in the village of Upahl. Now a court has imposed a freeze on construction: the municipality should be better involved in the planning.

1,600 people live in the municipality of Upahl, and 400 more are to be accommodated in accommodation for refugees.

That's not happening for the time being - after protests, the construction of the facility in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania was stopped.

The administrative court in Schwerin has issued an interim order, according to which construction may only continue until the municipality agrees to a building permit.

The justification stated that the community's right to participate had been disregarded.

The special regulations, which make it easier to set up refugee accommodation, "explicitly adhere to the requirement of community agreement," according to a press release from the court.

The district of Northwest Mecklenburg can appeal the decision to the Higher Administrative Court of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania in Greifswald.

A week ago, the district council of Northwest Mecklenburg approved the construction of refugee accommodation in Upahl.

According to the police, 700 people came together in front of the district council meeting building to protest against the construction.

Some participants are said to have tried to gain access to the district building.

However, they were prevented and pushed back by the police.

Emergency services were verbally attacked, and strangers had also ignited pyrotechnics several times.

Among the demonstrators are said to have been numerous well-known right-wing extremists from the region, Reich citizens and hooligans.

The district administrator called on the federal government to take action.

"The federal government must finally recognize the situation of the municipalities," said the CDU politician Tino Schomann in the ARD "Tagesthemen" with a view to the situation in the accommodation of refugees.

Accommodating 400 people in a community with 1,600 citizens - "that's a relationship that doesn't fit," said Schomann.
