Opel Grandland GSe, hybrid and muscular

2023-03-03T09:41:16.044Z

TEST – Following in the footsteps of the Astra sedan, this SUV brings back to life the famous GSe acronym which the sports versions of the German brand are traditionally rewarded with.

A sign of the times, the “e” in GSe no longer stands for “einspritzung” (injection) but “electric”.

First cousin of the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4, the Opel Grandland GSe indeed uses a rechargeable hybrid engine.

It consists of a 200 hp thermal engine, associated with two electric motors, 110 hp at the front and 113 hp at the rear.

The cumulative power thus stands at 300 hp, with a maximum torque of 520 Nm. Enough to reach 100 km / h in 6.1 s.

With a capacity increased to 14.2 kWh, the battery can theoretically travel up to 63 km in 100% electric mode.

In fact, hardly more than 50 km in practice.

On the consumption side, during our test on a varied route, we have, depending on the type of driving, found between 6 and 8 l/100 km in hybrid mode, and up to 10 l/100 km, once the battery is discharged.

This is the limit of the genre.

Opel nevertheless considers that the rechargeable hybrid is the best possible transition to all-electric which should be generalized to its range in 2028.

Between sport and comfort

A black roof, the color of which can be extended to the hood for an extra charge (€300), shields and specific 19-inch rims, that's all that sets the GSe version apart from the outside.

On board, this is limited to sports seats covered with suede, more enveloping but also less padded.

The evolution is more striking at the level of the chassis since this Grandland inherits a recalibrated steering and significantly firmer Koni adaptive shock absorbers.

The behavior is certainly more precise and the body roll less important but, the mechanics remaining rather undemonstrative, more than for its sportiness, it is finally first and foremost for its ease and smoothness of driving that we appreciate the GSe .

Between sport and comfort, this SUV, very well equipped but expensive (nearly 60,000 €), is therefore looking for its way a little.
