A 21-year-old man died this Thursday
after crashing his car at 200 kilometers per hour against one of the toll structures
on the route between Osorno and Puerto Montt, in south-central Chile.
The fatal victim could be identified 24 hours after the episode and, according to local media reports, it was Julio Urrea Díaz, who was studying Automation and Robotics and lived with his mother.
According to the first tests, Urrea Díaz was driving at 200 kilometers per hour,
"a speed considered unreasonable or prudent"
for the Trans-Andean country's Traffic Accident Investigation Section.
However, police authorities explained that due to the magnitude of the impact
"it is impossible, without the technical details that are the subject of investigation, to know the speed at which it was being transported
. "
The aforementioned "magnitude of the impact" was captured by the security cameras of the toll located at the height of Purranque, which show how the Ford Territory approached between lanes on Route 5 South and collided head-on against the structure that separates the roads that They go to one or the other booth.
When colliding, the car was engulfed in flames and one of its parts hit the camera, which caused it to lose the image for a few seconds.
"We witnessed an accident that we call high energy, with a vehicle burning, which when we arrived, the fire had already been controlled by the people of the concessionaire company. The victim's body was outside the destroyed mobile and we focused to contain a fuel spill that was generated," said Sebastián Pinda, captain of the Purranque Fire Rescue unit, as reproduced by the Emol news site.
Witnesses assured in statements to different media that the car's engine moved approximately 70 meters away from the place of the collision that occurred exactly at 9:53 in the morning.
“He was a quiet boy, he studied with one of my sons in both elementary and middle school and now he was in higher education.
He surprised us because I've known him since I was little, he's a year older than my son.
The news shocked me a lot because I can't believe it.
I send all my condolences to his mother and his family, ”Lorena Medina, a neighbor of the area, told the press.
The distance between Osorno and Puerto Montt is 106 kilometers along this route and it is estimated that the trip could take between an hour and a half and two.
