March brings with it mixed weather.

Winter thunderstorms mix with sunshine.

At the same time, the risk of forest fires in Germany should not be underestimated.

Kassel – March does not yet allow for real spring fever.

While the sun will still be showing in some areas on Friday (March 3), the outlook for the coming week is more wintry.

The big winter comeback, as predicted by some experts, will probably not happen.

A weather overview.

Weather in Germany: Expert warns of the risk of whiteout

Not much was left of the "big, snowy March winter", said qualified meteorologist Dominik Jung from

wetter.net

.

But what is left is enough to bring violent winter thunderstorms to Germany.

The expert warned of "snow showers, sometimes with a risk of whiteout".

"That means: for a short time, so much snow comes down during a shower, you can hardly see your hand in front of your face," he explained.

Caution should therefore be exercised, especially for motorists.

“But then it all melts away quickly down below.

The temperatures mostly remain in the positive range at low altitudes.”

The background for the "violent winter thunderstorms" is a cold air rush.

Especially on Tuesday (March 7th) and Wednesday (March 8th) "things can really get down to business" - including thunder and lightning.

There could also be gusts of wind.

Snowdrifts can also be expected at higher altitudes, says Jung.

According to the American weather model, there could be ten to twelve centimeters of snow, at least at higher elevations in the West.

A "longer closed snow cover down to low altitudes will probably not exist," said Jung.

Another weather expert predicts snowstorm "Björn" for Germany

Meteorologist Jan Schenk from The Weather Channel

has at least a somewhat similar weather forecast for the week beginning Monday, March 6th

.

According to his forecast, snow and storms also play a role in Germany's weather.

However, Schenk speaks of a snowstorm called Björn, which should come to us from the North Sea on Tuesday.

Then gusts of wind - in the north up to 100 km/h - and snowfall "all the way down" are possible throughout the country and ten centimeters of fresh snow are conceivable.

However, the amount of snow is not yet "completely certain" - we have to wait and see for the next few days.

The roads could be slippery on Wednesday - both weather experts agree on this.

On top of that.

According to the expert, Björn is leaving on Wednesday, but there is still no end in sight to the unpleasant weather.

"Then another rain and snowfall area is coming on Thursday and Friday".

Risk of forest fires in Germany: Four federal states are already at level three

So while snow will fall again in many places, it is also worth taking a look at the risk of forest fires.

As can be seen from the forest fire risk index (WBI) of the German Weather Service (DWD) from March 3rd, some areas are already in level three (of a total of five).

Rhineland-Palatinate, in the south of Hesse, in the north of Baden-Württemberg and in some areas Bavaria are particularly affected.

It was pretty dry there in February, Jung explained.

"But that will be reduced," he warned in this regard.

After all, a lot of moisture comes down from above - so Jung, alluding to the winter thunderstorms.

For the weekend around 11./12.

March "it will probably slowly become milder again," said Jung from

wetter.net

.

One could therefore speak of April weather rather than March winter.

And while many people in Germany are already squinting towards summer and longing for long-lasting pleasant temperatures, meteorologists are already daring to take a look at the forecasts.

Weather experts expect a record.

There could well be a hot summer in 2023.
