In several cities in Bavaria, parts of local public transport were at a standstill on Friday.

The Verdi union has already called for the next warning strike for Monday.

Update from March 3, 2:49 p.m .:

On Thursday (March 2) and Friday (March 3) buses and trains stood still in many Bavarian cities.

The reason for this is a warning strike by the Verdi union, which called for workers to stop working in public transport.

In Munich, almost all subways and buses were canceled on both days.

The Augsburg Transport and Tariff Association reported that local transport in the city had come to an almost complete standstill.

In the early morning, only 6 buses left the depot instead of the usual 140.

According to the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN), all vehicles in Nuremberg and Bamberg remained in the depot, in Erlangen, Fürth and Bayreuth there were emergency timetables.

In Regensburg, all inner-city bus lines operated by the municipal utility were eliminated.

In Ingolstadt, the INVG also expected massive failures.

Strike in Bavaria: Daycare centers and hospitals will also be affected in the next round

In the coming week, further protest actions are to follow in the separate collective bargaining round of the public service, as announced by the Bavarian Verdi district in Munich on Friday.

The next round of work stoppages is to follow at the beginning of the week on Monday (March 6).

Among other things, the staff of hospitals and public utilities are called upon, as well as some street cleaning or garbage disposal.

Warning strikes in day-care centers and social facilities are planned for International Women's Day on March 8th.

In addition, there should be further protest actions until the third round of negotiations with the employers at the end of March.

That said the deputy regional head Sinan Öztürk.

Strike in Bavaria: In these cities, the strike paralyzed public transport

First report from February 28th:

Nuremberg – The tariff conflict is escalating, now there is a large-scale strike in local public transport.

On Friday, March 3rd, parts of the public transport will come to a standstill in many Bavarian cities, in Munich this will also be the case on Thursday, March 2nd.

Strike in local public transport: It is also about climate goals and the mobility turnaround

There are two main reasons for the strike.

According to union secretary Franz Schütz, the employees in Munich in particular are very frustrated – according to Verdi, they get less money than the collective agreement for public transport otherwise stipulates.

The trade unionists are calling for an adjustment here.

The second reason is the demand from politicians for the necessary financing of public transport.

The union sees massive deficits here that would have to be eliminated if the turnaround in traffic is to succeed.

On this point, there is even agreement with the MVG, the Munich transport company.

But not only Verdi called for action - the climate activists from Fridays for Future are also involved.

The organization is calling for a global climate strike on Friday.

"Public transport is the backbone of climate-neutral mobility," emphasized the spokeswoman for Fridays for Future Munich, Jana Häfner.

Public transport employees would have to be better supported, otherwise climate goals and the mobility transition could not succeed.

Local transport employees in the cities of Nuremberg, Regensburg, Ingolstadt, Bayreuth, Augsburg, Bamberg and Landshut have been called to the warning strikes.

To what extent the warning strike will paralyze local public transport in these cities - or whether it can even come to a complete standstill - is currently not foreseeable.
