Tremors in the Munich gastronomy scene: The company Kuffler takes over the "Sedlmayr" near the Viktualienmarkt.

Munich - "The 'Sedlmayr' should remain a traditional Munich restaurant," promised Sebastian Kuffler on Thursday (March 2nd).

He leased the business together with his brother Stephan in July 2024, and the contract with the owner has already been signed.

The name "Beim Sedlmayr" should also remain: "It has a tradition in Munich," says the innkeeper.

A major renovation is planned.

The house, including the guest room, is being completely renovated, and in the future there will be up to 40 more seats.

"The 'Sedlmayr' will not be a second 'Spatenhaus'," Kuffler confirmed.

"It should remain a restaurant in which the locals in particular feel comfortable." Although modernity should also move in on Westenriederstraße: "We will also offer vegetarian and vegan dishes there." Kufflers expect that they will use the "Sedlmayr" be able to unlock again in mid-2025 after the conversion.

The Paulaner brewery remains the beer partner.

Kufflers take over "Sedlmayr" in Munich: traditional restaurant on the Viktualienmarkt

Kufflers are Munich gastro giants: they run the "Seehaus" in the English Garden, the "Wezelt" and the hotel "München Palace".

The "Sedlmayr" is "a stroke of luck, we've been looking for a suitable location in the city center for a long time".

“Beim Sedlmayr” is a cult.

The legendary landlord Rudi Färber (74) took over the traditional restaurant with the Munich Kronfleisch cuisine in 2000.

But in the fall of 2022, the host surprisingly announced the end of his business.

He only wants to be a chef in the future, the rest has become too exhausting for him.

At the time, Andreas Steinfatt, boss of the Paulaner brewery, was pleased that Färber wanted to train his successor – TV chef Hans Jörg Bachmeier – himself.

But as it has only now become known, it was probably not just age reasons that forced the cult host to withdraw, but bankruptcy proceedings.

Four days after Farber withdrew from the front row, he filed for bankruptcy.

"The application was received by the Munich insolvency court on October 18, 2022," says the authority's website.

Farber did not want to comment further when asked by our newspaper.

Bachmeier meanwhile announced that he wanted to look around for a new property with the "Sedlmayr" team and together with the Paulaner brewery.

"We're looking for a suitable restaurant near the Viktualienmarkt," he said.

But until the summer of 2024, everything will remain the same as before.
