Austria: Why the SPÖ remains the strongest force in the state elections in Carinthia

In the state elections in Carinthia, Austria, the SPÖ could again become the strongest force. It is in crisis nationwide - and the competition in the state is strong.

When a new state parliament is elected in Austria's southernmost state of Carinthia on Sunday, there will probably be no big surprises.

The re-election of Peter Kaiser, the acting governor of the social democratic SPÖ, seems as good as certain.

In polls before the election, the SPÖ comes to over 40 percent.

A result that is surprising when you look at the situation of the SPÖ in the federal government.

The Social Democrats have been losing approval there for months, and at around 24 percent are well behind the right-wing populist FPÖ, which is currently in first place nationwide with 28 percent.

The crisis of the SPÖ is related to the ongoing dispute over the party leader, Pamela Rendi-Wagner.

Some comrades, such as the Red governor from Burgenland, Hans-Peter Doskozil, make no secret of the fact that they consider Rendi-Wagner to be unsuitable as a top candidate.

Against this background, the question arises: What are the comrades doing right in Carinthia?

How does the SPÖ manage there, albeit with losses, to remain the strongest force, even though the FPÖ is traditionally successful, especially in Carinthia?

Many will blame the disputes of the federal SPÖ.

In this episode of Inside Austria we explain what makes the Red Governor Peter Kaiser so successful in Carinthia and why no other party seems to be dangerous to him.

We talk about the crisis of the SPÖ at federal level and the dispute over their party leadership: What can the Social Democrats learn from Carinthia, and will the election point the way for them?
