Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich apologized this evening (Saturday) for his call to "delete Havara", and explained on Channel 12's "Meet the Press" that he "stumbled on his tongue".

He also claimed that disturbances in the Palestinian village constitute "a most serious nationalist crime - but not terrorism."

On Wednesday, after the pogrom in Hawara, Minister Smotrich said that "the State of Israel should erase Hawara, God forbid not private individuals".

The statement drew condemnation from a number of countries, including the United States and Saudi Arabia.

US State Department spokesman Ned Price called the finance minister's statements "irresponsible, disgusting and repugnant".

On Sunday, after the attack near Hawara in which Hillel Menachem Yaniv, Weigal Yaakov Yaniv, 21 and 19, were murdered, hundreds of settlers came to the village, set houses, cars and families on fire, threw stones and shot at the residents - and according to reports also shot dead a Palestinian resident of the village.

Dozens of Palestinian families were evacuated from their homes after they were set on fire.

The security forces worked to remove the protesters and Maktazit arrived on the scene, but control was only achieved hours later - after they continued to attack and set fire to buildings in the area.
