"Fear of complete paralysis in the Chief Rabbinate" | Israel today

2023-03-05T06:06:04.302Z

"Israel Hayom" has learned that three of the managers of the important departments in the kashrut system were recently removed from their positions • Because of this, the supervision of meat imports and slaughtering is expected to be affected • Accusations in the religious sector: "Smotrich abandoned everything to my own devices"

Chaos in the Chief Rabbinate just before the holiday season: "Israel Hayom" has learned that three managers of the most important executive departments in the Rabbinate - the director of the kashrut department, the director of the import department and the director of the overseas slaughter department - were recently removed from their positions.

According to the rabbinate, the reason for their transfer from their positions is that they served only as substitutes, and the CEO of the Chief Rabbinate, Yehuda Avidan, decided not to request the extension of the position. It is currently unknown when tenders will be issued to appoint new managers for these critical departments.

In the absence of a permanent CEO for the chief rabbinate, there have been no tenders for these positions for several years, and therefore senior members of the rabbinate have been appointed to hold the position concurrently with their original positions. .

A department without a manager

Currently the wings are running without managers.

It should be noted that this is a particularly busy period as far as kosher is concerned.

In exactly one month, Passover will fall, and in businesses throughout Israel, they spend days and nights to prepare the systems so that they will be kosher according to Halacha, and therefore the kosher department is especially busy.

Also on the table of the import department are placed quite a few tasks in preparation for the holiday of Passover on its various products.

After the upcoming holiday, the slaughtering season will begin, one of two that take place a year, so this department is also required to prepare for the dispatch of many teams that carry out the slaughtering in the various countries.

"There is no one responsible for all the imported meat and the 10,000 kosher certificates that are provided in Israel, and there is no director of a national kosher division that oversees this entire operation," says an official in the Chief Rabbinate.

"If they immediately put out a tender to replace them, that would be great, but to leave the whole issue in a vacuum, without someone to provide a response in the event of a crisis? Who is supposed to operate this entire operation? Approve slaughter, issue kosher certificates? There is a fear here of a complete paralysis of the system." .

The sweeping decision not to allow the employees of the Chief Rabbinate to work in more than one position led, among other things, to the fact that at least three of the employees who were removed from their positions, all related to the kosher reform, are wearing knitted kippahs.

Sources in the religious sector claim that this is not a coincidence, because even though the director general of the rabbinate comes from the religious-national sector, the head who leads the rabbinate belongs to the Shas party: "All of Smotrich's words regarding preserving the Jewish identity of the state were a distraction and he is the deserter "You give everything to Aryeh Deri, thereby weakening the Jewish identity," they claimed.
