According to experts, southwest Germany must now adapt to new wolf packs.

Schluchsee/Stuttgart - According to an expert, the south-west of Germany will have to adjust to packs of wolves in the near future.

Felix Böcker from the Forestry Research and Experimentation Institute in Baden-Württemberg said on Friday at a general meeting of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park Association in Schluchsee that there are already several indications that point to a possible pair of wolves in the Schluchsee area in the southern Black Forest.

Numerous regions in Germany have to adapt to packs of wolves

According to the expert, if the two wolves are actually a pair, it is likely that a pack will soon form.

"The mating season of the wolves is now or has just been," Böcker said at the meeting.

A photo trap that photographed two wolves together in the Schluchsee region recently gave clues to the pair of wolves.

The photo then made headlines in the area.

Because if the female is pregnant after this mating period, according to Böcker, there could be a pack in May or June.

The chairwoman of the Southern Black Forest Nature Park, Marion Dammann, also made it clear that she was counting on a pair of wolves in the country.

"Of course we have to assume that pack formation is very likely in the next few weeks."

The region is not the only one that could become home to new wolf packs in the future.

As Böcker goes on to say, "further pair and pack formation" in Baden-Württemberg is also likely beyond the Schluchsee area.

So far, three wolves are considered settled there, all of them are males and live in the Black Forest.

Two of the wolves roam the south.

The wolf population in Bavaria is also increasing.

Spread of the wolf in Germany - a controversial topic

A total of 161 wolf packs, 43 pairs and 21 sedentary individuals live in Germany.

"Sedentary" means that even after six months, evidence of the wolf is still found in the region.

Wolves are in Germany and the other EU countries.

protected.

However, their spread is very controversial, since they repeatedly kill livestock and there are fears that they will affect tourism.

The conservation policy spokesman for the FDP parliamentary group, Klaus Hoher, criticizes the green-black state government.

It only protects the wolf on one side.

Baden-Württemberg has invested around ten million euros in protecting livestock from wolf attacks since 2018.

“The wolf has not been threatened with extinction for a long time, but grazing animal husbandry will soon be,” said Hoher, according to a statement.
