The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) announced today that two of its staff members were kidnapped in northern Mali yesterday.
“We confirm that two of our colleagues have been kidnapped in the region between Gao and Kidal,” Agence France-Presse quoted the committee’s branch in Mali as saying in a statement, adding: The committee has been working in Mali for 32 years and is a “neutral, independent and impartial organization.”
Since 2012, Mali has been witnessing a security crisis and instability, as acts of violence and kidnapping of foreigners as well as Malian citizens are common, with motives ranging from ransom demands to revenge.
