The Pöring and Steinhöring fire brigades recently showed a heart for animals - they helped an aging horse named Sam back on its hooves.

- "He just moved," says Vroni Höfer, spokeswoman for the Steinhöring volunteer fire department, about an animal patient that she had to look after on Friday morning, March 3rd.

On a farm in the hamlet of Winkl, senior gelding Sam settled down so unhappily in his box that he couldn't get on his hooves.

He was too close to the wall and therefore could not swing, says the spokeswoman for the fire brigade.

She then took care of the animal, which, despite its calm mind, was anxious and excited given the hustle and bustle of the rescuers. "It's also a form of patient care - just like with people," says the firefighter.

The rescue control center also decided to bring in the fire brigade colleagues from Pöring (municipality of Zorneding).

The local weir has a special lifting harness for large animals.

With this and with the combined forces of the firefighters, it was finally possible to get Sam back on his feet.

For this manoeuvre, a veterinarian who had been alerted as well had given him a light anesthetic to calm him down.

The campaign was successful without injuries to humans or animals.

Sam's owners would lovingly take care of the senior gelding, firefighter Höfer observed.

Now he should get special rubber mats in his box that make it easier for him to get up.

So that the horse can remain mobile even in old age.
