The lecture, which was hosted by the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Al-Baath University in Homs today, focused on the need to develop a national plan of action to confront natural disasters in the field of building and construction work for the next stage within strict rules and foundations.

The lecture organized by the Office of Culture, Preparation and Information at the Arab Socialist Baath Party branch at the university, in which Dr. Issam Melhem, a professor at the College of Civil Engineering, spoke about the importance of establishing contracting companies with qualified engineering cadres to implement structurally sound facilities, and not allowing contractors who do not have sufficient experience to enter this field, and activate Procedures for inspecting buildings, verifying the existence of safety standards in buildings before sorting them, activating the mechanism for detecting cracked buildings, and achieving engineering inspections on buildings to indicate their tolerance for seismic loads.

Melhem pointed out during the lecture that was held within the Baath Forum for Dialogue, entitled (Factors for dealing with natural disasters, the most important of which are earthquakes - Challenges and Solutions), that many buildings in Syria are not resistant to earthquakes, and serious thought must be given to fortifying them, noting that the code for earthquakes in Syria was established in 1995 .

In turn, Dr. Faiq Shaddoud, Secretary of the Baath Party branch, referred to the role of the university in achieving a rapid and emergency response after the earthquake that hit Syria, and the contribution of national cadres in the College of Civil Engineering, who formed rapid work teams to inspect the university buildings, Homs governorate, in addition to some buildings in Hama governorate. He considered that this disaster should push everyone to improve performance and work with high responsibility at various levels.

Melhem answered the attendees' questions and inquiries about the earthquake, rifting, and the seriousness of some of them.
