The tastiest there is: Who won Israel Hayom's big manna ear test? | Israel today

2023-03-05T09:48:02.269Z

As every year we gathered to taste the food most associated with the holiday of Purim - the ear of manna • Special fillings, crispy doughs and surprising flavors - which 10 ears of manna made the coveted list? • And also: while you were celebrating - the prices went up

The haman ears have long since "functioned" as traditional haman ears, but as a real dessert.

As every year, the various confectioneries offer a variety of new and special flavors: for example, you can find fillings such as pralines with M&M's candy on top, marzipan, white chocolate with mango jam, and more.

In the flavors of the Roldin chain, you can find manna ears in pecan, citrus pistachio, chunky chocolate, rose and strawberry marzipan and more.

In the second chain you can find lemon cream, Chinese pecan halva and more.

This year, the highlight of the chain is a large personalized manna ear filled with pastry cream and strawberries, at a price of NIS 17.

In Tati you can find manna ears with homemade jam and streusel, ruby crispy dough filled with white chocolate and more.

Biscotti offers citrus poppy, pecan tahini, luaker and tropicana - a combination of chocolate and mango jam.

Another trend that can be pointed out this year is the increase in the prices of manna ears, which went up to NIS 180 per kg. According to a test we conducted, this is an increase of about 20% in prices compared to last year. Food chains also have an increase in the prices of manna ears, which are a tradition during the holiday of Purim. According to a test conducted by The Consumer Council through Pricez, a kilogram of manna ears filled with chocolate - the cheapest in the category - cost 38.8 NIS on average in February last year in the chains, compared to 44.7 NIS in March this year, an average difference of 5.8 NIS (15%).

If you are trying to maintain your health and shape during the holiday, a particularly difficult task, you may not be happy to hear that Dr. Reli Abel, a senior dietitian of the general in the central district, says that a normal ear of manna contains 300-500 calories per 100-120 grams.

As mentioned, again this year we conducted the big tasting test of "Israel Hayom", and we present to you the 10 ears of manna that received the highest marks - by weighing all the points of the tasters.

1st place: Tati - manna ears made of ruby dough filled with white chocolate

Grade:

Review:

the dough is particularly crispy and delicious and the filling is chocolatey and delightful, but nevertheless delicate, so the sweetness does not take over too much.

The combination of flavors is interesting and the pink color is cool.

This is a perfect candy that you don't want to stop eating.

Price:

NIS 4 per unit, NIS 180 per kg

3rd place: breads - manna ears filled with marzipan

Score:

7.6

Review:

We know marzipan in chocolate, with fruit filling or soaked in alcohol, but wrapped in dough?

It turns out that it actually works when the dough is of sufficient quality, not too thick and not too sweet - and here it was a little sweeter than desired, but still tasty and comforting.

Price:

NIS 6 per unit, NIS 156 per kg

Haman's ears are nostalgic and classic.

The dough is firm, crispy and crunchy.

The filling reminds a bit of the taste of dawn chocolate.

The chocolate is concentrated and sweet, but not too much, thus creating a precise balance between the filling and the dough.

Price:

NIS 140 per kg

6th place: a collaboration between the chef-patissier Dodo Utmazgin and M&M's - Haman Praline Ears

The white chocolate coating is extremely delicious and blends well with the dough below.

However, the dough is a little too hard, and the candy on top is a little unnecessary, even though it is the star of the story.

7th place: Aya Tamam - Art Of Dessert - haman ears with pistachio, halva and macaron pieces

A good combination between the pistachio and the halva cream.

However, the filling is a little too sweet and the pistachio is not recognizable enough.

The dough is soft, buttery and melts in your mouth.

8th place: Biga - gluten-free manna ears filled with pistachio crunch

Score:

The taste of the dough is balanced, but the dough crumbles too much.

The white chocolate coating is delicious, but together with the dough, a slightly sweeter combination is created than desired.

The pistachio makes the difference and adds to the taste.

Price:

NIS 45 for 8 units weighing 150 grams, NIS 300 per kg
