He seems to be asleep and in reality his dream has been going on for 2,300 years.
He is the man from Tollund,
perhaps the most beautiful mummy he has ever known.
That man was born 300 years before Jesus Christ and died when
he was about 40 years old
.
And he has a story behind that despite time could be reconstructed.
This is how it was when it was found in 1950.
In 1950, in Silkeborg, a small town in Denmark,
a student had disappeared
and the community organized his search.
On May 8 of that year, in the peat bogs of the village, the body of a man was found.
But when the forensics arrived they discovered that it was not the missing boy but a
mummy in an incredible state of preservation.
The first photo of his face taken in 1950.
The body was taken to the National Museum of Denmark in Copenhagen.
As it was found.
In a fetal position, almost naked, barely covered with a sheepskin.
But there were three more items: a belt, a beautiful fur cap on the head, and
a noose tied around the neck.
Scholars could not believe that a body had been kept for so long in such a perfect state of preservation.
his last meal
His feet and hands are in incredible condition, so much so that his fingerprints
could be taken.
And her internal organs were so well cared for that they were even able to see the last meal she ate: a
barley seed soup.
Analyzes showed he ate a soup consisting of 85 percent barley (335 grams), nine percent of the pale willow weed plant (29 grams) and five percent flax (16 grams).
The bog where it was found.
The remaining one percent consisted of plant remains from
20 different species.
Furthermore, based on protein analyses, the researchers concluded that the Tollund man
also ate fish,
either in or alongside the soup.
That's how it was found.
On his neck the rope that executed him.
Its preservation was due to the place where it was buried:
the peat bogs
.
In them there is a type of
moss
, the Sphagnum that generates an acid that is not affected by any bacteria, even when under water.
That acid caused the man from Tollund to mummify himself in a perfect and sweet way, with his wrinkles, his closed eyelids, his mustache, and
his beautiful fur hat.
How he died
And the present world ruined the Tollund man.
When he found his body in the peat bog it was in much better condition.
It was the body of a man who had been dead for days.
But when removed from the acid environment where he was,
he began to degrade.
One of his hands.
They even took his fingerprints.
For this reason they had to separate the head and subject it to treatment so that it would not be destroyed like the body.
The size of the head
has been reduced by 12%
and if anyone goes to see it at the Silkeborg museum, they should know that the body is a replica.
Only the head is real.
His dream is already 2300 years old.
And in that head is the sad answer of his end.
That noose the Tollund man wore around his neck indicates that
the man was executed
for a crime and then buried in the peat bog covered in a sheepskin to sleep in peace.
A peace that lasted 2300 years.
Until it was discovered.
And his eternal dream ended...
