Five people were injured in a "tragically ironic" shooting Saturday just miles from a gun buyback event in Los Angeles, authorities said.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, the five male victims were at Royal Palms Beach having a barbecue with a large group of people at 05:45 pm when two male suspects approached and a physical altercation ensued.

Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors President Janice Hahn was hosting a gun buyback event, where residents can trade their guns for compensation, within miles of the shooting, she said in a tweet posted Saturday.
"We are outraged and saddened by the shooting at Royal Palms Beach in San Pedro that has left five people injured. It is tragically ironic that we organized a gun buyback today just a few miles from that location. Gun violence is wreaking havoc on our community," he wrote in a joint statement with Councilman Tim McOsker.
A suspect reportedly fled the scene in a car, but no arrests had been made as of Saturday night.

The Wilmington gun buyback event was organized by Los Angeles County Supervisor Janice Hahn in collaboration with the police department.
At least 45 guns were exchanged for gift cards at the event, Hahn said.
The Royal Palms beach in San Pedro, located west of Terminal Island and the Port of Long Beach, will remain closed Sunday to continue the investigation of the shooting and will close earlier on weekends while working to formulate plans "to ensure the safety and peaceful use of the community," said Hahn and McOsker.
