The Champions League round of 16, a possible 'picadora' of technicians: from Messi's PSG to Enzo Fernández's Chelsea

2023-03-06T09:36:35.380Z

This week the first four classifieds are defined, although those results can mark the future of several big clubs in Europe. Case by case analysis.

Saying goodbye in the round of 16 of the

Champions League

is not usually appropriate for a coach who is teetering on a tightrope at the big clubs in Europe.

And in this context,

Lionel Messi's PSG

and

Enzo Fernández's Chelsea

are perhaps the two most important exponents that will play all or nothing when they resolve their series against

Bayern Munich

and

Borussia Dortmund

, at a disadvantage.

Both have a reputation for dismissing big-name coaches unceremoniously - such as Carlo Ancelotti and Thomas Tuchel on both teams - and will face their respective rematches with a 0-1 aggregate result.

Graham Potter

has been in charge of Chelsea for six months and continuity could be played at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday.

The club spent more than 300 million dollars in the last market, including the million-dollar purchase of Argentine midfielder

Enzo Fernández

, but cannot translate it into quick results.

Christophe Galtier

has PSG at the top of the French league in his first season, but falling by the wayside against Bayern Munich in Germany on Wednesday could cost him his job.

In fact, he endured a mini crisis in which there was talk of Zinedine Zidane as his successor.

Galtier is the seventh coach in the almost 12 years that have elapsed since the Paris club was acquired by Qatar.

Even before the purchase, no one survived four seasons at a club that had

31 different managers in its 53-year history

.

The instability of the DT's is something normal in the European elite, and the eight coaches who will be in action in the Champions League this week have a service time of less than 10 years.

It is less than the 11 seasons that the Argentine Diego Simeone has led Atlético de Madrid, a stage that included two Spanish League titles, two Champions League runners-up -both lost to Real Madrid in games that went to extra time- and two consecrations in the Europa League.

A sudden change of coach took effect this season in Benfica -with the world champion

Nicolás Otamendi-

, well outlined to reach the quarterfinals.

The Portuguese will host Bruges on Tuesday, with a 2-0 lead in Belgium.

Roger Schmidt

celebrates his first campaign as a Benfica coach.

Milan will defend a 1-0 lead when visiting

Tottenham

on Wednesday.

It will be the only game of the week between clubs that retained last year's coaches: Stefano Pioli and Antonio Conte, respectively.

Bayern Munich and PSG, a separate story

The two clubs that largely torpedoed the creation of the European Super League in 2021 by refusing to participate, collide in a knockout phase of the Champions League for the third time in four seasons.

Bayern won the 2020 final, and then PSG knocked out the reigning champions in the quarterfinals.

That was the last time the away goals rule was interceded in the tournament before UEFA scrapped it in 2021.

History repeated itself in Paris three weeks ago when Kingsley Coman scored the solitary goal for Bayern, as the former PSG player did in the final three years ago.

PSG has dominated the front pages of the newspapers ever since.

Three straight victories in Ligue 1, including the 3-0 rout that he delivered to his classic rival Marseille, calmed the mood.

In addition, he physically recovered his star

Kylian Mbappé,

who became the club's all-time scorer this weekend -he reached 201 goals at just 24 years old- and

Lionel Messi

is one shout away from reaching 800 in his professional career, after of having been chosen as the best soccer player in the world at the annual FIFA awards gala.

The bad news is that Neymar will miss the Bayern match through injury and right-back Achraf Hakimi is embroiled in an investigation over a rape claim.

Julian Nagelsmann's Bayern also enjoyed a 3-0 win in a Bundesliga matchup, beating Union Berlin.

The Bavarian team have won the seven games they have played this season in the 'Champions', without conceding goals in six and none at home, something that PSG will have to do yes or yes to have a chance of reaching the quarterfinals.
