Canberra, SANA- The Australian Syrian Arab League held a solidarity event in Melbourne to demand an end to the violence.

The Syrian Arab Australian Association held a solidarity event in Melbourne to demand the lifting of the unilateral Western coercive measures imposed on Syria, in the presence of a number of members of the Syrian and Arab communities in Australia, in addition to a number of Australian deputies. It included a collection of donations for those affected by the earthquake.

In their speeches, the participants called for lifting the blockade and sanctions imposed on Syria, stressing their solidarity with the Syrian people following the disaster of the earthquake.

In her speech, Maria Vamvakino, the Australian federal representative representing the Cole Well seat, indicated that what harmed Syria was not only the earthquake, but also the long-term siege imposed on it, pledging to transfer the demands of the Syrian community to the Australian government to lift the siege on Syria.

For her part, Bronwyn Halfabene, a member of the Australian Parliament representing the state of Victoria for the seat of Thomastown, expressed her sadness at what she heard from the community about the repercussions of the siege, sanctions and the earthquake on the Syrian people, stressing that she will communicate with the community and the Syrian Arab Australian Association to convey their demands to the Australian Parliament.

The representative of the Lebanese Marada Movement, Nabil Hanna, and the Syrian Social Nationalist Party, Samir Al-Asmar, affirmed their solidarity with Syria in confronting the Western coercive measures and the earthquake disaster.

In his turn, the Syrian ambassador to Indonesia, Abdel Moneim Annan, referred in a speech via Skype to the repercussions of the terrorist war on Syria since 2011, and the coercive measures of sanctions, blockade and economic terrorism, calling for awakening the global conscience and lifting the unjust sanctions so that the Syrians can rebuild their country.

For his part, the head of the Australian-Syrian Arab Association, Abdullah Al-Taweel, called in his speech on the Australian authorities to lift the coercive measures against Syria, indicating that in view of the catastrophic loss that befell innocent people in Syria, what is required of Canberra is to lift the sanctions now.

During interviews with SANA's correspondent, a number of the community members present at the event and a number of representatives of the Syrian associations in Melbourne, such as the Jasmine Families Association represented by Bassem Marzouk, the Zenobia Women's Association represented by Norma Medawar, and the expatriate Ali Saqour, who works in an Australian government institution, confirmed their support for their homeland to overcome its ordeal. Stressing their support for the Syrian Arab Australian Association in its campaign to demand the lifting of the siege and sanctions on Syria, and to secure the needs of our people affected by the earthquake.

The Lebanese actress, Layal Abboud, also indicated that Syria represents the warm embrace of all, wishing well and safety for her people, and she also had a donation stop for Syria and its people through the association.

At the end of the event, the door for donations was opened, as members of the community took the initiative to provide aid to our people in Syria.
