Floridsdorf – The Austrian offshoot of “Bares für Rares” also regularly sells real treasures over the dealer counter.

With all their expertise, however, the antiques professionals at the junk show, as in this country, can sometimes be completely wrong with their assessments.

A painting by the painter Ferdinand von Rayski (1806-1890) fetched its seller a measly 550 euros, but was subsequently auctioned off for a five-figure sum - which could have serious legal consequences.

43,250 euros for a 550-euro bargain: "Bares for Rares" purchase auctioned for a multiple amount

Getting record sums for a dusty painting is a dream of many who find their way into the awe-inspiring sales halls of "Bares for Rares" - but this wish does not always come true.

The community employee Alexander Steinmeyer (39), the moderator Willi Gabalier (41) and art expert Prof. Erich Tromayer (74) presented the Rayski painting "Wild Rabbits in the Grass" at the end of January, and after negotiating with the dealer Markus Kral (59) were disappointed 550 euros.

Because the condition of the work of art, which was riddled with fine cracks, was very poor according to Erich Tromayer, no higher amount was paid - at least not in the program broadcast on Servus TV.

After Alexander's visit to "Bares for Rares", it wasn't long before the detailed painting found a new buyer - for a staggering sum.

As the Austrian newspaper “Der Standard” reported at the time, 43,250 euros were offered for the painting at the Vienna auction house Dorotheum – a drastic increase on the sum that the original owner was allowed to take home.

The biggest "Bares for Rares" treasures

Ever since the very first episode of “Bares für Rares” premiered on ZDF on August 3, 2013, the bargain-loving dealers have acquired a few real treasures – at breathtaking prices.

In 2019, Cosima Birk and her daughter Stephanie Huber received 42,000 euros for a piece of jewelery containing splinters of wood from the cross of Jesus Christ.

In 2021, Marlies Fischer received 30,500 euros for a lithograph by the expressionist painter Otto Mueller, of which only 20 exist worldwide.

In the same year, Sabine Riemer was delighted to receive 29,000 euros for a gold-plated drinking vessel from the court of the Russian Empress Catherine the Great.

So you can tell: visits to the flea market and rummaging around in the attic pay off.

Because of misjudgment: "Bares for Rares" customer goes to court

It is not clear whether Alexander was deliberately cheated and robbed of big money or whether it was actually just a gross misjudgment on the part of the experts.

As the father of the family made clear to the "standard", he would take legal action - on the basis of "laesio enormousis", the "excessive damage".

If the opinions of other experts are to be believed, his chances could be very good, because according to the daily newspaper, the auction house "im Kinsky" is said to have estimated the value of the unrestored painting at 6,000 to 9,000 euros.

Art expert Erich Tromayer underestimated a painting by Ferdinand von Rayski at "Bares für Rares Österreich" and Alexander Steinmeyer was only offered 550 euros for it.

A short time after the shooting, the work of art was auctioned again - for an astronomically higher amount.

Nevertheless, it is obvious that the incident is entirely due to Erich Tromayer's unsuccessful assessment, because the Rayski expert Stefan Günther (64) explained to

: "The estimator was wrong.

Paintings by the painter von Rayski fetch significantly more.” The German version of the junk show also caused a scandal, because two deeply relaxed brothers laughed at the dealers during “Bares for Rares” and broke off the negotiations.
