“Foreign agents”: Georgia draws inspiration from Russian law

Early this Monday morning, they were already 2000 or 3000 on the forecourt of the Georgian Parliament, shouting

"monebi"

("slaves") to the deputies of the majority.

They must continue this week the examination of a bill that its detractors call the

“Russian law”

.

This text says

"on the registration of foreign agents"

and the

"transparency of foreign influence"

, in reality only targets NGOs and the media supported by the West.

It was introduced by a group of deputies from the ruling party which, since June, has been developing a rhetoric straight out of Moscow.

The draft law resembles in all respects the text adopted in 2012 by Russia on

“foreign agents”

.

It would also oblige media and organizations registered in Georgia to register on a

"register of agents of foreign influence"

when more than 20% of their income comes from a

"foreign power"

.
