'Let's tell the good', the new Libera campaign is underway

(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 07 - A diverse population of associations, social cooperatives, from the world of volunteering from Lombardy to Sicily, protagonists of the transformation from assets in the hands of the mafias to common and shared assets.

On the occasion of the anniversary of the law n.

109/96 for the public and social reuse of assets confiscated from the mafias, Libera surveyed the experiences of social reuse of confiscated assets.


   There are 991 different subjects involved in the management of real estate confiscated from organized crime, obtained on concession from local authorities, in 18 regions, in 359 municipalities.


   More than half of the social realities is made up of associations of various types (525) while there are 217 social cooperatives (with 5 cooperatives of workers from confiscated companies and 26 consortia of cooperatives).

Among the other subjects managing the third sector, there are 13 amateur sports associations, 30 public bodies (including health agencies, park bodies and consortia of Municipalities that offer subsidiary welfare services managed by third sector subjects), 40 temporary associations networks of associations, 59 realities of the religious world (dioceses, parishes and Caritas), 31 private and community foundations, 17 scouting groups and finally 30 schools of various levels.

The region with the highest number of social realities that manage assets confiscated from the mafias is Sicily with 267 managers,


    In the research, Libera has reconstructed the typology of properties managed by the managers;

in many cases the single experience of reuse includes several confiscated assets, even of different cadastral typologies.

40% concerns apartments, independent houses, buildings;

18% villas, multi-level buildings of various cadastral typologies, small buildings;

19% agricultural land, building land and other types of land (also pertinent to real estate);

10% commercial or industrial premises, sheds, warehouses, storage rooms, shops, workshops, offices.

Furthermore, 57% of the managers carry out activities that are directly linked to welfare services for the community;

27% deal with the promotion of knowledge, sustainable tourism and culture and 10% are in the agricultural world.

Eighty-eight managers have chosen to name their experience after an innocent victim of the mafia.
