Many cats do not like to be petted on their stomachs.
Cat connoisseurs know that.
The result of a study from England is all the more surprising.
Cats can be stubborn at times, but they don't like being alone and should be taken care of at home.
Most house tigers also need their regular stroking and enjoy being gently scratched on their head, under their chin or on their cheeks.

However, there are a number of things that can go wrong when petting cats.
Some of them don't like being stroked on their stomachs or tails.
Because in places like these, the hair follicles are particularly sensitive to touch.
Some cats also don't like being petted on the legs.
And of course every cat is an individual.
Everyone who likes and knows cats knows that.

Petting cats: What even cat connoisseurs are doing wrong according to the study
The result of a study in England on the interaction between humans and cats, in which a total of 120 people took part, is all the more surprising.
They were placed with cats they didn't know at a London animal shelter and filmed interacting with them for several minutes.
They were asked to let the cat come to them and not to follow them, according to a statement from Nottingham Trend University.
Otherwise, however, they were encouraged to interact with the cats as they would, for example, at home.
The result shows that apparently even cat connoisseurs make mistakes.
The scientists found out in the study that those people who subjectively assessed themselves as more knowledgeable and experienced in relation to cats were more inclined to stroke the cats in places such as the belly or the base of the tail.
In addition, in the situation posed, some cat owners with longer experience gave the animals less freedom to approach them than they actually need.
However, there were also cat owners who did exactly the right thing and let the cats come to them.

Understanding Cats: Don't confuse experience with competence
The researchers emphasized that, in addition to perceptions of one's own abilities, past experiences or people's personalities may also have an important influence on the behavior and well-being of cats and other pets.
One thing is clear: the well-being of the cat should always come first.
"Of course, every cat is an individual, and many have certain preferences in how they prefer to treat us," said animal researcher Lauren Finka, according to the university's statement.
"However, there are also some good general principles to follow to ensure each cat is as comfortable as possible and that their specific needs are met."
