Brussels replies to the premier, it is necessary to act on 3 fronts: cooperation with the countries of North Africa, safe humanitarian corridors and coordination of SAR activities. Another victim recovered in Cutro, a 3-year-old girl (ANSA)

The EU Commission "responded" to the letter that Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote on the problem of migratory flows.

A spokeswoman for the EU executive says so.

The letter acknowledges the need to find long-term solutions to the migration problem, in line with the Commission President's message ahead of the February Council, to renew efforts to reach an agreement on the Migration Pact and give operational responses." "Migration must be tackled with a holistic approach, fighting traffickers, implementing repatriations for those who have no right to stay, but also offering clear paths for safe and legal migrations".

The moral duty to avoid tragedies like that of Cutro and the necessary work on three priorities

:

to cooperate with the countries of North Africa

to avoid irregular departures,

to develop safe humanitarian corridors and to increase coordination for Search & Rescue activities

.

The president of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen wrote it in the letter in which she replied to Giorgia Meloni after the Cutro tragedies.

"I totally share your opinion that as Europeans, politicians and citizens,

we have a moral duty to act to avoid such tragedies.

The latter must therefore serve as a reminder to redouble our determination to bring effective and lasting solutions", wrote von der Leyen, recalling that, if "it is true that migration is a complex and constantly evolving reality" it is also true that " we have shown that when we act together,

the EU can manage migration.

For example, with the millions of Ukrainians fleeing the war in Russia"

which "caused the largest displacement on our continent since the Second World War.

It is clear that migration is a European challenge that requires a European solution

."

In the text, the number one of the European executive also explains how "to advance in the new Migration and Asylum Pact to break the cycle of piecemeal solutions that do not bring sufficient progress".

From here, von der Leyen underlines, three priorities derive: "

helping those in need of international protection,

preventing irregular departures, fighting criminal traffickers,

offering paths for safe and legal migration, repatriating those who do not have the right to stay

" .

In the letter - in which von der Leyen also copies

the President of the EU Council Charles Michel and the Swedish Prime Minister (President for the semester) Ulf Kristersson -

the President of the Commission announces that,

between now and 2025, the EU will make half a billion available for resettlement in Europe through humanitarian corridors of around 50,000 people.

He also anticipates that, at the European Council on 23 and 24 March, he will provide a report on the state of the art of the operational measures put in place by Brussels so far.

"To work together towards a

more coordinated approach in Search and Rescue activities,

the Commission has relaunched the European Contact Group as part of the Central Mediterranean Action Plan. The group offers a space to promote coordination between national authorities. They are happy with Italy's strong involvement".

The president of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen

wrote it

in the letter of response to Giorgia Meloni after the

tragedy of Cutro

.

"At the next European Council it will provide the state of the art on the operational measures proposed in February".

"We must focus our efforts on those in need of

international protection

by providing them with real alternatives to falling into the hands of criminals. The work of Italy and others in offering

legal and safe pathways

through humanitarian corridors makes a crucial contribution," continued von der Leyen - We will provide at least

half a billion in financing new settlements

and humanitarian corridors between now and 2025, offering support to at least 50,000 people".
