A shooting at the Santiago de Chile Airport has left two dead this Wednesday in the framework of a frustrated robbery attempt.

The shots have been fired in a confrontation between a gang of criminals, preliminarily made up of 10 assailants distributed in three trucks, and security guards.

The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office has reported that the deceased are an agent of the General Directorate of Civil Aeronautics of Chile, who was also a volunteer for the Fire Department, and one of the assailants.

The gang has tried to steal $32 million that was in a truck of securities.

The money was stored in 25 bags and came from a commercial flight from Miami, United States.

The Metropolitan Prosecutor's Office and Sub-Prefect Agustin Urbina, from the Robbery Investigation Brigade, have reported that the assailants used pistols and shotguns.

After the shooting, the criminals fled and minutes later two cars were found on fire

near the Arturo Merino Benítez airport, in the municipality of Pudahuel.

They are still investigating whether they correspond to the vehicles captured by the airport security cameras.

The Undersecretary of the Interior, Manuel Monsalve, has detailed that around 8:00 a.m. the criminals "reduced the guard of the security booth" at the entrance to the airport, tied him up, beat him, and took a firearm from him.

"Later, they went in the vans to one of the airport unloading terminals, in which there was a Latam plane from Miami."

The shooting occurs in the midst of a security crisis in the South American country, where the feeling of insecurity reaches its highest level in two decades.

President Gabriel Boric, in an act to commemorate International Women's Day, has regretted the facts.

"We will tirelessly persecute those who put the lives of compatriots at risk," said the president.

“I want to show solidarity and send a big hug to the family of the DGAC official.

We know that security is a priority for Chilean men and women, and when there is insecurity all the rest falters”.
