A man who dresses up as a woman on Purim is a cross dresser in the closet? - Walla! Sheee

Purim is probably the only day of the year when both sexes agree that being a woman is better. Why do men like to dress up as women, what is cross dressing and when should a woman dress up as a man?

Several years ago, musician and writer Yuval Ben Ami, son of news anchor Oded Ben Ami, revealed that he usually wears women's clothes, despite being straight and married to a woman who accepts his cross-dressing.

Ben Ami claimed that it was not some kind of desire to dress up, but a deep need to express a part within him, without which he would not be complete.

He said that when he dresses as a woman, he completely changes his appearance, from shaving his beard and hand hair to makeup, nail polish and jewelry, and the external change leads to the formation of a new persona, with a different voice and body language.

Ben Ami the father, by the way, congratulated him in the most beautiful way possible, and claimed that we live in a democratic and free country (well, that was a few years ago, I already said) and that it is great that his son is not normal, because "if everyone was square like me, it would be very boring" .

There is almost no man in Israel who has not taken advantage of Purim, at least once in his life, to dress up as a woman.

Of course, being a woman is the most fun.

When it's one day a year and not 365 days of routine maintenance.

Come to think of it, this might be the only day of the year when both sexes agree that being a woman is better.

Believe the one who decided to dress up as a cowboy in the fourth grade and came to school with a painted mustache.

Let's say that already in elementary school boys were more in the section of delicate princesses and less in the section of humor.

Even when you leave the boundaries of Purim (or Halloween, for that matter) and look in general at the cross-dressing phenomenon - "wearing clothes that are traditionally or stereotypically associated with the opposite sex" - you find that there are many more cross-dressers than cross-dressers.

Again, this makes perfect sense.

The colors and richness of the female outfits and accessories are much more pan than those that are considered masculine.

But that's not exactly true either.

Cross-dressing is defined as an action or behavior that allows people to express themselves in a way that crosses the conventions that define the expected or "proper" form of clothing in any gender.

Clothing that used to be defined as "masculine", such as pants or suits, is today completely legitimate for both sexes, so for women, there are far fewer conventions to cross in terms of clothing.

But when you are a man, there are still quite a few items of clothing and accessories that are considered distinctly feminine, and are supposedly out of bounds.

It may be that the same process that took the pants and suits out of men's possession and transferred them to the public domain is also happening in the other direction these days.

It is enough to look at pop stars of our time and before, from David Bowie and Prince to Lil Naz X, Harry Styles and Margie (who was also recently chosen to lead a new makeup campaign), to understand that the boundaries are blurring.

But until cross dressing becomes simply "dressing" and disappears from the world, let's go back a moment and understand what it is exactly.

Cross dressing, or "cross dressing" in Hebrew, is a phenomenon even older than the common custom that you have to freeze in a minimal costume just to not relive your childhood traumas from that time you dressed up as a cowboy with a mustache.

Already in Greek mythology, the gender reversal in appearance was considered a way to approach or surrender to the gods and as part of the worship, for example to the goddess Aphrodite, men used to wear women's clothes and women used to dress up as men and wear fake beards.

Hindu mythology also includes descriptions of cross-dressing, some as stories about the gods themselves and some as part of traditional rituals.

In the past, the term used to describe the custom was transvestism, but today it is considered outdated and offensive, and it is known that there is not necessarily a connection between cross-dressing and transgenderism or sexual orientation.

Cross dressing can be done out of a desire for personal or fashionable expression, for entertainment needs, as part of a show or out of some inner need.

Many times, cross-dressing will be kept secret and done under a "normative" gender guise, such as in the cases of using female underwear or a binder (an item of clothing used to flatten the chest), and in other cases the cross-dresser will make a real transformation in order to assimilate into the public without their original gender being noticed at all.

This is compared to drag queens or kings, a type of cross-dressing for show purposes, which is based on the externalization and empowerment of gender characteristics.

But just as there are people for whom it really is a deep and real need, there are also stories of cross-dressing for purely practical reasons.

Most of them are related to prohibitions and restrictions imposed on women, some are related to wars and the need for camouflage, and some are just silly.

Get a definitely partial list:

• In the 15th century it was Jeanne d'Arc who led an entire army to victory while wearing a man's uniform and armor, an act that became one of the charges against her later.

Even when she was in prison, she continued to wear soldier's clothes and refused to wear women's clothes.

After the verdict was read against her, which included many other charges, she was told that if she pleaded guilty and went back to dressing like a woman she would not be put on the stake.

She agreed, but two days later she denied the confession of guilt and returned to the soldier's uniform, which led to her being burned while still alive.

•At the beginning of the 19th century, when universities refused to accept women in their ranks, a woman named Margaret King dressed as a man in order to be admitted to medical school.

At the beginning of the 20th century, a writer named Vita Squill-West, who wanted to travel with her girlfriend, wore a soldier's uniform to avoid the street harassment that was then the inevitable fate of women who dared to walk around alone.

•In the late 19th century to the early 20th century, a group of 11 schoolgirls in Russia ran away from school and disguised themselves as men to join the Russian army fighting in World War I.

• Ehud Barak, in his honor and by himself, posed as a woman as part of the "Aviv Naorim" operation held in Beirut in 1973.

• In 2015, two young men from Ramat Gan were arrested after the man, dressed in women's clothes and wearing a wig, tried to impersonate his girlfriend in order to take a psychometric test in her place.

• In 2022, a drug dealer who was in prison in Paraguay after committing a robbery, disguised himself as a woman in order to escape from prison.

After receiving a private visit from a woman, and probably with the assistance of some of the guards, he changed clothes, put on a wig and even bothered to apply nail polish, and left the prison unmolested, but within a few hours he was identified and sent back to prison.

• In the same year, a horrific massacre was carried out in Illinois, in a parade on the occasion of the American Independence Day, when the shooter was disguised as a woman in order not to arouse suspicion and to hide the tattoos on his body.

He managed to get swallowed up in the crowd and disappear but was caught a few hours later.

• And last and really fresh: about a week ago the governor of Tennessee announced that he intends to limit drag shows and ban their existence in public places to prevent children from being exposed to lewdness and sexual entertainment, as he said.

A few days later, pictures of him from the yearbook were published, dressed as a cheerleader, with a wig, skirt and pearl necklace.

oops

Conclusion: being a woman is less suspicious, it's much more interesting and it's really, really fan.

Especially if you still appear as "male" in all the official forms.
