When it comes to naming, some expectant parents show real creativity.
Whether this is always to the advantage of the children remains debatable.
Cologne/Munich - Every year, hundreds of thousands of parents-to-be are faced with an important question: What name should the newborn bear in the future?
Finding a suitable name can be a mammoth task for many couples.
For others, however, it is very easy.
A poll revealed the most unpopular first names for newborns in 2022.
When parents are particularly creative, the naming process can sometimes produce extremely bizarre results.
In principle, the name of a newborn must be submitted to the responsible registry office.
But what goes too far - and which unusual names were actually allowed?
Which criteria play a role in the naming?
A number of criteria play a role in the decision on first names for the Office for Press and Public Relations of the City of Cologne, as
reported by
RTL.de.
The first point mentioned by an employee of the office was the welfare of the child.
Furthermore, gender plays a crucial role.
This should be "clearly recognizable" from the name.
Whimsical Name Requests That Were Actually Approved
The Cologne registry office has already confirmed a number of first names, which should probably be considered rather unusual.
It revealed some of them

Some expectant parents don't stop at names from plays like Shakespeare, well-known film series like Game of Thrones or Greek mythology.
So it is quite possible that children are given the first names Hamlet, Khaleesi or Achilles, as Frauke Rüdebusch from the Society for German Language (GfdS)
revealed to
RTL.de.
In the past few years, these names have been "notarized without further ado" by German registry offices.
Name "Alexa" increasingly unpopular because of Amazon
In 2022, however, the case of a girl from Lower Saxony showed that it does not always have to be strange names that can have extremely unpleasant consequences for the child - for example at school.
As the GfdS wrote in a press release in August 2022, a 6-year-old girl managed to "obtain a court ruling in her favor so that the registry office would accept a change of her name".
The girl suffered from her name: her parents had called her Alexa.
After the Amazon voice control with the same name became more and more popular in Germany, this "gave increasing occasion for others to make derogatory statements and issue orders," wrote the Gfds.
Fewer and fewer parents now want to name their child that because of the provider.
