How to live without mosquitoes: the 7 most effective tricks so they don't invade your home

2023-03-08T09:37:10.349Z

It is not necessary to spend on insecticides or fumigations. According to experts, a series of simple measures keep them away. Practical Guide.

They not only disturb sleep and cause annoying hives.

By biting, they transmit dangerous diseases such as

dengue

, which is now worrying again.

To stay safe, living in a

mosquito-free

home  is key.

And the good news is that

it's possible

, even at this time of year when they seem unstoppable.

Although the idea of eradicating mosquitoes is often seen associated on television with colorful

fumigation operations

, to keep these bugs away it is not necessary for someone to spray the garden with insecticides.

Something like this, in fact, would be of

little help

since those chemicals only kill the adult specimens, but

not the eggs

or larvae.

In a matter of hours, then, the mosquitoes will multiply and bite again.

What is really effective, according to experts, is that each neighbor puts into practice a battery of simple and mostly free

prevention measures

 .

Why mosquitoes love our homes

Manuel Espinosa, head of the Department of Mosquito-borne Diseases of the Mundo Sano Foundation, told

Clarín

that the mosquito that should worry us the most is the

Aedes aegypti

, as it is the transmitter of dengue,

Zika

and

chikungunya

.

"In Buenos Aires the

population peaks

are registered

from October

and

until May

or June, although prevention measures should always be maintained," he considered.

The biologist explained that, contrary to popular belief, the Aedes aegypti is an

urban

and

domestic

mosquito .

"

It lives in our homes

mainly. In patios, gardens and balconies, or even inside houses and apartments."

Why do mosquitoes insist on settling in our homes?

According to Espinosa, because they usually find

what they need the most

:

  • Blood sources

to be able to produce eggs: that is, human beings to bite.

  • Cool

and refrigerated environments to take refuge from extreme heat, which would kill them out in the open.

  • Containers and places with

still water to lay their eggs and reproduce.

"We tend to leave a lot of

things lying

out in the open without realizing that, when they get wet, they become

breeding grounds for Aedes aegypti

. Any water tank that lasts at least

a week

will be a breeding ground," he said.

Mosquitoes attach their eggs to the walls of any container that collects water.

The 7 most effective measures to live without mosquitoes at home

Taking this into account, the specialists from Mundo Sano and the National Ministry of Health recommend:

1. Eliminate objects and containers that collect water

.

Large and small, inside the house and in patios, pools, balconies and terraces.

From cans, open bottles, buckets and drums to

tires

, old appliances and pieces of plastic or canvas.

If they cannot be ruled out, they should at least be

turned upside down

,

under roof

and controlled so that they do not accumulate water.

2. Clean often everything that collects water

.

For containers that cannot be eliminated, empty them

every three days

 and wash them with detergent,

rubbing their edges and walls well

with a sponge or brush to remove any mosquito eggs that may be attached.

It is key to do this with

flower pots

,

vases

, pet

drinking fountains

and air conditioner water collectors.

3. Check the drains

.

So that they do not become breeding grounds, it is best to cover them with

mosquito netting

.

Or

pour boiling water

through the grate once or twice a week to kill eggs and larvae.

4. Do not neglect the pools

.

So that mosquitoes do not lay eggs on its edges, it is key

to apply chlorine

daily to the water, as well as filter it.

And at the end of the summer, prevent them from accumulating rainwater.

Canvas pools must be disassembled, cleaned, dried and stored indoors until next year.

If not well maintained, canvas pools can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

5. Attention to gutters

.

You have to check that they are always clear, just like the rain drains from the

roofs

.

Many times they are blocked by leaves and branches that fall from the trees, and puddles are generated that mosquitoes will use to reproduce.

6. Alert the neighbors

.

Eliminating Aedes aegypti mosquitoes is not an individual task, but a community one, since it is enough for a house to have breeding sites for these mosquitoes to quickly reach the rest of the houses on the block.

Therefore, another preventive measure is

to convince

those who live nearby to take the same preventive measures.

7. Place physical barriers

.

Although all of the above will greatly reduce the number of mosquitoes in the area, some may remain.

Like the Aedes albifasciatus, which do not transmit dengue but manage to nest in simple puddles of rainwater.

For this reason, it will also be useful to install

mosquito nets and curtains

on all

doors and windows

.

Enclosures with mosquito nets, an effective solution.

What else can be done to prevent mosquito bites and dengue

-

Wear light clothing

.

If possible, if the temperature allows it,

covering arms and legs

.

-

Get repellent

.

Especially while you are outdoors, and reapplying it when necessary.

The most widespread are those based on DEET, a chemical that should be used sparingly.

As an alternative, there are products with non-toxic natural substances, such as citronella oil.

-

Use environmental repellents

.

If mosquitoes have entered the home, resorting to

tablets

will help protect a bedroom at night.

And the

spirals

will serve to repel mosquitoes in well-ventilated places.

-

Protect yourself with tulle

.

Ideal for the night, placing mosquito nets over beds and cribs will prevent mosquitoes from biting those who sleep inside.

Do I have dengue?

What are the symptoms and how to act

Dengue generates

fever

in people  accompanied by conditions such as

headache

,

muscle and joint pain

, nausea and vomiting, intense fatigue, conjunctivitis, loss of appetite and skin rashes.

When these symptoms appear, the first recommendation is

not to self-medicate

with painkillers or fever reducers, as this could inhibit the symptoms.

The indication is

to call a doctor

or go to the guard of a health center as soon as possible.
