I find it unthinkable that women cannot have the protections they need.

On the C à Vous set on Monday March 6, Elisabeth Borne spoke about menstrual poverty.

The Prime Minister announced the establishment of a "

reimbursement by Social Security

of reusable periodic protection from next year

", for women under 25 years of age.

Nearly four million French women are victims of menstrual precariousness in 2023, according to the OpinionWay survey for Basic Rules, published Monday, March 6.

"

Anyone who has financial difficulty in having enough sanitary protection to properly protect themselves during their period is in a precarious situation

," the statement said.

This study was carried out from February 15 to 24, 2023 on 1022 menstruating women aged 18 to 50, based on responses to an online questionnaire.

Of the four million women in precarious situations, 2.6 million have had to give up buying periodic protection for financial reasons, at least once a year.

And among those who have been able to obtain it, 1.2 million have had to give up other essential goods, at least once a year.

The survey highlights another worrying fact: women under the age of 25 are the most affected by this precariousness.

30% of French women aged 18 to 24 have been financially forced to give up buying periodic protection.

Weak prospects for improvement

These alarming figures have doubled since 2021. Indeed, 1.7 million women did not have access to periodic protection in 2019, according to a study carried out by Dons Solidaires in partnership with the IFOP.

An estimate reassessed to 2 million in 2021 by Elementary Rules, due to the Covid-19 crisis.

This worrying phenomenon continues to grow since 47% of women in poverty in 2023 claim to have never been victims of menstrual poverty before the year 2022.

The reason ?

The drop in purchasing power and the inflation that is hitting the country.
