At the center of the new exhibition "Otuma" - which is shown at the farm gallery in Holon - stands an unexpected star: the black opaque garbage bag - the one that can be found in every home.

The exhibition features 34 Israeli designers and artists from various fields including: fashion design, photography, video art, sculpture, poetry, painting, drawing and fashion who refer to the well-known item found in every home, the same black trash bag when each of them takes it into their world and with all of them it takes on a life of its own.

"In our automatic memory and imagination, the sealed black plastic bag refers to at least two radically different matters. On the one hand, the disposable garbage bag designed to contain household garbage, and on the other hand, body bags that are used after a person's death," explains the curator of the exhibition, Dr. Guy Morg Tsepalevich .

"In both cases, the color and visibility are similar, but the contents are completely different, from the most precious thing to us to trash that has no importance or value. The black color of the bag is intended to hide its contents from the eye of the viewer, sometimes out of shame for what is in it and sometimes actually to preserve the honor of the dead."

According to Tsepalevich, "the material from which the household garbage bag that we all know is made is a product made of an organic synthetic polymer, better known by its trade name nylon. Since nylon decomposes very slowly in nature, the concept of sustainability has led to many ideas among artists as the creative mind constantly tries to 'turn garbage into gold ". Such an example was seen during the last fashion week in Paris where the fashion company Balenciaga launched a bag inspired by a garbage bag that looks almost identical to the original item but is made of calf leather and decorated with a subtle logo. The models walked the runway with garbage bags in their hands as a symbol of the refugee experience, which is forced to put in the bag The little he saved from his life in his haste to leave his home when he was running away from it, and with her to wander the world and look for a new place to live in. In addition, the fashion house launched a luxury bag made of garbage bags, which costs 1700 dollars."
