The U5 extension is more realistic than ever.

According to new calculations, she is now eligible.

The federal and state governments would pay up to 90 percent of the construction costs.

District – The extension of the U5 to Taufkirchen has become much more realistic.

According to the district office, it is even "more tangible than ever".

As the district authority announced yesterday, the project is now eligible for funding according to a current cost-benefit calculation - this has not been the case so far.

In order for the subway to actually travel to the southern district in the future, hurry is required.

The district and all other parties involved have to sign important papers by the end of March.

Among other things, the district must make a binding declaration to Stadtwerke München (SWM).

Without such a declaration, the district office explains, SWM will build the second subway depot in Neuperlach-Süd without the necessary U5 depot structure.

Then the planning time window closes - "and the subway extension is history forever".

Prime Minister Söder has promised his support

In order to prevent this, all those involved - district, municipalities and state ministries - are currently working on a joint declaration.

It should make it clear that the development of the Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn university location for aeronautics and space travel is to be maintained, that it is to be opened up by subway and that it is actively involved.

But all of this must be contractually lashed down by the end of March.

"If this does not succeed," emphasizes the district office, "the district council will not make any commitment to finance the holding structure - the risk would be too great." After all, Prime Minister Markus Söder has promised his support.

The district also has an important commitment from the Bavarian Ministry of Transport.

In a letter, Minister of State Christian Bernreiter (CSU) explains: "The Free State will continue to support the district in receiving federal funding for the U5 extension to Taufkirchen." The federal government would therefore subsidize the project with up to 75 percent of the eligible costs , the Free State promises up to a further 15 percent.

The district would only have to bear ten percent of the costs.

477 million euros for 5.3 kilometers

With the extension, the U5 will run every ten minutes on a 5.3-kilometer route to the campus in Taufkirchen.

Further stops are planned in Neubiberg and Ottobrunn.

The experts from Intraplan Consult GmbH estimate the construction costs at 477 million euros.

But there is positive news not only for the subway, but also for the S-Bahn.

The chances of an expansion of the S7 are good, according to the district office.

In parallel with the preparations for the U5 during the construction of the new U-Bahn depot in Neuperlach Süd, the Free State, SWM and MVG could also create the conditions for the double-track expansion of the route in the direction of Kreuzstraße.

"In the interest of a demand-oriented S-Bahn development, the possibility of a double-track expansion of the S 7 should be preserved," emphasizes Transport Minister Bernreiter in his letter to the district office.

District Administrator Göbel: "The time is ripe"

The promises and words of support were certainly well received there.

"I'm counting on the success of the project and on a subway extension to the south - especially now that the subsidy signs are green," District Administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU) is quoted as saying in a press release.

Now, however, action must follow: "The time is ripe, and I expect everyone involved to commit to the TUM campus in Taufkirchen/Ottobrunn and its development via subway and to take the necessary steps to develop it." The same applies to the double track expansion of the S 7.

Göbel himself has a free hand, he can sign the joint declaration that is so important.

The committee for mobility and infrastructure of the district council gave him its unanimous approval in its non-public meeting on February 13th.

In addition, the committee recommended that the district council approve the financing of the retaining structure in March - provided that the municipalities of Ottobrunn and Taufkirchen and the Free State ministries involved also signed the declaration.
