A summit to revive Franco-British understanding

ANALYSIS – The meeting this Friday between Emmanuel Macron and Rishi Sunak aims to restore a relationship damaged by Brexit.

For close neighbors, the separation was long.

Admittedly, France and the United Kingdom spoke to each other amiably through many channels - and sometimes more harshly through the press - but no meeting at the highest level had taken place for five years.

The last bilateral summit brought together Theresa May and Emmanuel Macron in 2018 in Sandhurst, England.

This is to say if the reunion of this Friday was expected.

In both camps, we compete in optimism before the discussions in Paris.

London speaks of the "

renewal

" of the agreement between the two countries and points out that this is only Sunak's second visit to Europe, after a trip to Kiev.

And therefore the first to an EU Member State.

In Paris, we profess a "

high ambition

" for a summit of "

restoration

” of the relationship.

This will be the third meeting between Emmanuel Macron and Rishi Sunak, who saw each other during the COP27 on the climate or a G20.
