It is a name known all over the world.

From Médoc to Libournais via Entre-Deux-Mers and Sauternes, Bordeaux is an extremely rich wine region, covering 110,000 hectares.

From March 9 to 11, hundreds of winegrowers and merchants will travel to more than 560 cities in France to share their passion, in restaurants, wine merchants and large retailers, during "authentic encounters" between winegrowers and wine

drinkers

. .

"

In the middle of a shelf of wines, you will come across a winegrower with a Vins de Bordeaux apron, who can explain his wine and those on the shelf to you

", gives as an example the Conseil Interprofessionnel du Vin de Bordeaux (CIVB) at the

Figaro

.

For this second edition of the

Bordeaux Wine Tour

, 1,400 events are planned, ranging from tastings at wine merchants and restaurants to the distribution of discount coupons in supermarkets, via wine masterclasses.

The objective is to tell consumers about the authenticity of Bordeaux, because there are a lot of prejudices

,” reports the CIVB.

This approach therefore does not have a “

purely commercial

” aim, but is intended to be “

an opportunity to meet and discuss with consumers

”.

Among the hundreds of professionals who will make the trip from Bordeaux, 60% are winegrowers (45% winegrowers and 15% cooperative cellars) and 40% merchants.

A difficult context for winegrowers

The

Bordeaux Wine Tour

had already taken place in 2020, around Saint-Vincent - the patron saint of winegrowers - but could not be renewed in 2021 due to the health crisis.

Although Bordeaux is the first French vineyard in terms of wines rewarded with a controlled designation of origin, the situation of winegrowers there is increasingly difficult.

A report by the Gironde Chamber of Agriculture revealed in January that a third of winegrowers in the department are facing serious financial difficulties.

The winegrowers also demonstrated in the streets of Bordeaux in December, a first since 2004, to ask for “

grubbing up premiums

” in order to diversify their activity and reduce their production in the face of falling consumption.

In response, the Minister of Agriculture, Marc Fesneau, announced in February a distillation campaign endowed with 160 million euros.

The CIVB recalls, however, that "

France remains the leading market for Bordeaux wines and the most important

", despite significant exports.
