Military observers are right to look closely at the remarkable developments in the military situation in Bakhmout.
Because after having fought for every square meter, and blindly sacrificing thousands of men, the Russians find themselves threatened with a symbolic setback so resounding that it could mark the beginning of a real stampede, or at least a series reverse.
It is perhaps still too early to confirm the dynamic, but the ongoing encirclement of Yevgueni Prigojine's private Wagner militia by a surprise maneuver by the Ukrainians who had pretended to withdraw, is something to ponder.
It shows how well the Ukrainians have learned to master the art of decoys and asymmetric maneuvers.
The encirclement of Wagner could mark the end of the bloody “gloriole” of the private military group which boasted of demonstrating its superiority over the regular Russian army, but cried out at the shortage of ammunition.
