"She is not simply a relative of the head of the operation, but she participates," says the Mexican government about the wife of the former secretary, convicted of drug trafficking.

The Mexican government, chaired by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, denounced Linda Cristina Pereyra this Thursday before the Attorney General's Office (FGR) for alleged complicity with her husband, former Secretary of Public Security Genaro García Luna (2006-2012), declared convicted last month of drug trafficking by a US federal court.

He did it the same day that he showed the ostentatious bunker from which García Luna and his team controlled strategic points in the country in the fight against drug trafficking.

Pablo Gómez, head of the Government's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU), accused García Luna's wife of being part of an alleged corruption scheme of the former secretary that obtained more than 700 million dollars of illegal origin, invested in part, according to the authorities, in properties in Miami (Florida).

"She is denounced by the Government of Mexico through the UIF for operations with resources of illegal origin and some other crimes, like several of her relatives, who have been beneficiaries of part of this immense booty that was

generated

through the Ministry of Public Security,” Gómez said at a press conference, according to the Efe news agency.

Linda Cristina Pereyra, wife of Genaro García Luna, was the only witness for the defense in the drug trafficking trial against the former Secretary of Security of Mexico.

"García Luna's wife is not simply a relative

of the head of the operation, but she participates," he added, "she appeared in [the federal court in] Brooklyn and explained the origin of the money they have, explained the salaries , explained other types of activities," he explained, according to a report in the newspaper El Universal.

During the trial, Pereyra took the stand as the only witness in her husband's defense.

But

the Mexican government filed a civil lawsuit in 2020 in Florida

to claim the public money that, according to him, García Luna and her family took to Miami.

“She owns four apartments in Miami that are intervened by the court,

from the long list of properties that are insured by the Miami court, where the civil lawsuit that claims these assets is filed, four of them are directly in the name of her," Gómez explained.

The complaint is revealed after a jury in New York found García Luna guilty on February 21, who led the fight against drug trafficking during the presidency of Felipe Calderón (2006-2012), of five crimes related to drug trafficking, receiving millionaire bribes from the Sinaloa Cartel that he had to fight.

García Luna is imprisoned in the United States awaiting the judge's sentencing and

could face a sentence of 20 years in prison or even life in prison.

In addition, he has several investigations and arrest warrants open in Mexico.

The Mexican authorities accuse García Luna of leading a network of corruption and money laundering for his own benefit and that of his relatives.

He allegedly

embezzled up to $745.9 million

from government technology contracts.

They also consider him responsible for the illegal entry of thousands of weapons through the failed US federal operation known as

Fast and Furious and

for fraudulent contracts that the Calderón government made with private companies to build and provide services to federal prisons.

facilities as large as a soccer field

with three underground levels full of screens that supposedly continued to operate live

"when in reality they were recordings at the wrong time."

, said the current head of Security, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, as reported by The Associated Press news agency.

The bunker, located in Mexico City and

whose construction cost more than 3.3 billion dollars

and was inaugurated in November 2009, has operating rooms connected to more than 600 points throughout the country and strategic facilities such as a generation plant of energy and another of water recycling.

It also has

a 400-meter tunnel that connected it to the García Luna offices.

The center is currently under the command of the National Guard, the body created by the Government of López Obrador and which is commanded by the Mexican Army, although it was originally thought of as a civil entity.
