Scream 6: The masked killer moved to New York...

2023-03-09T11:40:35.223Z

The sixth installment of the franchise stars Mexican actress Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega and Courteney Cox, among others.

Following crimes in the fictional small town of Woodsboro, the masked killer from the

Scream

franchise returns bloodier and more ruthless than ever in a

slasher

story that fans of the genre will love.

It seems that time did not pass so quickly, but the fact is that the original film, where Ghostface appeared for the first time, was directed almost 30 years ago by

Wes Craven

, a specialist in the art of terrifying viewers with touches of black mood.

He is also responsible for the appearance of the terrifying Freddy Krueger, who tormented our dreams in the

Nightmare in the Deep of the Night

saga .

Kevin Williamson, original screenwriter, is now joined in his task by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick.

Together, they took the action to New York, that enormous cosmopolitan city where the indifference and apathy of the inhabitants are accentuated in the face of any strange event that occurs on the street.

There the directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (the same as

Bloody Wedding

and

Scream 5

), found what they were looking for to carry out what is perhaps the bloodiest episode in the adventures of the disturbing homicidal.

Now the actions are transferred from the small town to Manhattan.

And they more than succeeded from the first minutes of the plot, when a woman awaits the arrival of her date in a luxurious restaurant.

She impatient, she receives a call from the man who is waiting and by following her instructions, she ends up in an alley where we already know that she should not have gone.

But that's the genre;

never go alone into dark places.

Tormented

The adventures of the script follow Samantha (Melissa Barrera), who, tormented by her thoughts, goes to the office of Dr. Stone (Henry Czerny), in search of help.

She and her sister Tara (Jenna Ortega, the revelation of the Netflix series

Merlina

) are survivors of

Scream 5

and carry a complex past as the daughters of serial killer Billy Loomis.

On their move to the Big Apple, they share an apartment building with Mindy (

Yellowjackets

' Jasmin Savoy Browne ) and her twin Chad (

Love, Victor

's Mason Gooding ), two centennial film students, who also had death on their heels in the previous movie.

Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, in the new horror classic.

The protagonist begins to be harassed by telephone, and the victims do not take long to appear around her.

Willing to investigate the facts, Detective Bailey (Dermot Mulroney) and Kirby Reed (Hayden Panettiere) intervene, the only one left alive in

Scream 4

, transformed into an FBI agent, ready to do justice.

As everything becomes public, the relentless journalist Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox, ex

Friends

, with a new face) also reappears.

The creators manage to catch the eye by refreshing what happened in the previous five films, building unsettling suspense moments like inside the crowded subway and achieving highly dynamic action scenes, although some dialogues are slow and too explanatory.

The film has some homages to other horror films, such as "The usurpers of bodies" and "Tuesday the 13th, Part VIII".

There are a couple of tributes with images of two classics such as

The Snatchers

and

Tuesday the 13th Part VIII

with the ruthless Jason in Manhattan and, as in the first, a brief and interesting analysis of the elements that constitute horror movies, in the mouth of Mindy, an expert in that genre.

It is not convenient to give more details so as not to fall into spoilers and eliminate the surprise.

Just a piece of advice: don't give away the surprising ending.
