The Nobel Prize for Literature Mario Vargas Llosa, the first Spanish-speaking writer to enter the French Academy, was awarded this Wednesday by the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, with the Great Collar of the Order of the Sun. His mere presence meant a I support the Government in the midst of the social upheaval in the country since last December.

But Vargas Llosa made his support more explicit and gave a speech that to date is one of the strongest accolades the president has received.

“I recognize in you the constitutional president of Peru, because you have assumed the first magistracy respecting legality and the rule of law.

Not only that, he has also urged Congress to determine the state that allows a satisfactory solution to the current problems, ”said Vargas Llosa, leaning on his cane, before the smiling gaze of the first woman president of Peru.

The Nobel also stressed that the current government has not curtailed freedoms, despite the criticism it has received for the more than 60 deaths and more than 1,300 injuries in the demonstrations.

“It is unfair to maintain, as some interested groups do, that in Peru there has been a rupture of the constitutional order and democracy.

Like any democracy, the institutions carry out their tasks including investigations to punish, from whatever position, those who have committed abuses, offenses or crimes.

This is irrefutable proof that a democratic system continues to prevail in our country,” he said.

Vargas Llosa also took the opportunity to send a clear and direct message to the heads of state who have criticized the Dina Boluarte mandate, such as Gustavo Petro, from Colombia, and Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in Mexico.

“As is known, some governments in the region moved by ideologies or political interests have improperly intervened in Peruvian internal affairs, dragging down its neighbors, questioning the legitimacy of their government.

We firmly reject their interference that violates international standards and the most basic principles of good neighborliness."

Accompanied by his children Álvaro, Morgana and Gonzalo, and also by his ex-wife Patricia Llosa, the 86-year-old writer pointed out that the waters are calming down in the country that he was able to govern in the 1990s.

“Although I live abroad, the affairs of Peru have never been foreign to me […] Despite the persistence of certain signs of violence and activities, Peru has gradually recovered normality.

We are all aware of it.

And, finally, we respect the policy that you embody and that is rigorously the defense of Peruvian democracy," he concluded.

Then there was the obligatory photo between Vargas Llosa and Boluarte, who in some way was another honoree of the night.
