He arrived in the UK full of dreams and hope.
It had been
a tough journey
from his native Iraq, including crossing the English Channel in a small boat, but he had done it.
However, things
did not go as expected
.
He tried to start his new life but setbacks kept piling up and after a while he gave up and melancholy engulfed him.
He wanted to go home but had no money or work to make the trip back, so in desperation, he resorted to another strategy:
get the authorities to deport him
from the country.
And with that goal in mind, Rebaz Mohammed, we talked about him, went out one day and
stabbed Ellis Wheeler
, an 18-year-old college student, whose only sin was to accidentally cross the man's path.
A camera captured the brutal moment when Mohammed, who is 28 years old,
savagely attacks the defenseless Wheeler with a knife
.
The images quickly went viral on social media.
The video
shows how the Wheeler was left fighting for his life
after Mohammed plunged the knife into the teenager's back while he was walking through Hoglands Park in the English state of Southampton.
The knife, which is common in the kitchen,
pierced one of his lungs
, and the young man had to undergo emergency surgery when the lung collapsed.
The man attacked a boy in the middle of a park.
Wheeler managed to evade more blows and flee, but
ended up passing out
before he could get medical help.
Fortunately, a man who was also passing by dressed as a hero.
He called the ambulance and kept
pressing on the wound to stop the bleeding
until the police arrived.
Meanwhile, the attacker did not move from the place.
And there he was arrested.
He told the officers that he had launched the attack because
he wanted to be deported from the UK.
Richard Tutt, the man's lawyer, told Southampto Crown Court that "Mohammed believed from what he had been told that he
needed to commit a serious enough offence
."
Mohammed was sentenced to 6 years in jail.
“
He comes across as a very naive person
.
He has experienced remorse, or at least grief," the lawyer added.
Mohammed, who
entered the UK illegally
, was living in a hotel in Bournemouth, Dorset, at the time of the crime.
He had no job or money and had been "making every effort to be deported."
He had previously been warned for criminal mischief and assault and in May 2022
served 12 weeks in jail for
racially aggravated harassment and stalking.
Meanwhile, Wheeler, a Solent University freshman, remained under observation for five days after he
underwent surgery for a collapsed lung.
The boy ended up missing his exams and
is still struggling to sleep as anxiety haunts him
, prosecutors said.
Judge Brian Forster KC sentenced Mohammed, who admitted grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a knife,
to six years in prison
.
But finally, Mohammed did not receive what he wanted so badly.
The judge
did not authorize his deportation
From him.
And instead, he must pay his sentence in an English prison.
